I Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
At the church in Corinth there was division among the people. They messed up the use of spiritual gifts; they were living however they wanted, not according to scripture. Earlier Paul noted how some referred to others as though a man saved them. Only the gospel saves a person. Not the Baptist, the Methodist, or any other denomination. Only Jesus Christ can save. The gospel is the remedy for every church and its people. The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, and it needs to be preached more than it is. We don’t need more feel-good messages; we need the gospel. Tell people about Jesus. Then living like Jesus is the best way to show Him to others.
Living it–have you been hurt by someone? Forgive. Jesus did. Deacon Stephen did. He was stoned and killed for the gospel and asked that it not be laid to their charge. People will hurt us. We must forgive and go on. Holding unforgiveness doesn’t hurt the offender; it hurts us. God has forgiven us so many times and for so many things. We in turn need to forgive. Remember the Bible says that with the same measure we judge others we will be judged. Forgiving is part of the gospel.
We can stand upon the gospel. It’s how we got saved. It wasn’t by the preacher. The gospel must get into the heart; a head knowledge of the gospel won’t save. There has to be a change of heart; otherwise, the head knowledge is in vain. Paul delivered to the Corinthians what he received. That’s what I’m doing. I listen to the Holy Spirit. I study the Word to speak the message of the gospel. What is the gospel exactly? Jesus died for our sins. Isaiah says our iniquities (sins) became His sin. Our chastisement was put on Him. God doesn’t overlook sin. That’s why He didn’t overlook Adam’s sin. The suffering for sin was awful, yet Jesus did it for us.
God wants us to choose Him. He gave us all a free will to do what we want. Choosing Him is possible because of the gospel. He suffered the cross because He loves us so much. He died and was buried. He was definitely dead. Romans knew how to crucify. They did it all the time. The cross where Jesus died is where we must go and lay ourselves down to Him. He was buried in a borrowed tomb and rose again, according to the scriptures. He was raised to show us there is new life in Christ. Heaven opened up to us when Jesus descended to Abraham’s bosom. Those from the Old Testament who believed were waiting on the Messiah and could then truly be saved. Jesus led them out of that captivity to heaven.
He offers us the gospel. I offer you the gospel, the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you need salvation, it will only come through believing the gospel? When was the last time you thanked God for the gospel? For the cross? The resurrection? We have a blessed hope. We know it’s all going to be okay because of Jesus Christ. He came. He suffered. He died and was buried. He rose again! That’s the gospel, the only gospel that can save a person from sins.
