The Veil That Separates Us From God

The message was brought by Rev. Tim Powers on 10/18/26.

We skip over the Old Testament sometimes saying it’s boring.  The thing is, we can find Jesus all through scripture from the Old to the New Testament. Something separates us from God. Let’s take a look at it.

Exodus 26:31 And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made: 32 And thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of shittim  wood overlaid with gold: their hooks shall be of gold, upon the four sockets of silver. 33 And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy. 34 And thou shalt put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place. 35 And thou shalt set the table without the vail, and the candlestick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side. 36 And thou shalt make an hanging for the door of the tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework.

In the Old Testament we see in the tabernacle and the temple that a veil was put up.  It separated the Holy of Holies from everything else. It was about 60 feet tall, 30 feet wide, and had a woven thickness of 3-4 inches.  This was practically a piece of furniture, not easily moved because it was very heavy.  No man could go beyond this point and access the Holiest place but one time of year.  And it could only be the High Priest.  Inside, beyond the veil, was the Ark of the Covenant and the Mercy Seat. This one time of year he took the blood of the sacrifice and sprinkled it on the Mercy Seat.  He had to make sure he was pure himself by doing exactly what the Law said to prepare, else he would die when he went inside.

The veil represents sin.  It separated man from God.  Just like the veil, sin is heavy and keeps us from the Lord.  The Bible says all of us have sinned against God.  There are no little and big sins in God’s eyes.  All sin is serious to Him.  This message is aiming for my heart as much as it is yours.  We can’t get close to God because of the barrier of sin.  We can’t go to heaven on our own merit.  God only accepts perfection. Who could do that?  Only Jesus lived a perfectly sinless life and fulfilled the Law of God.

When the temple was built, there was a place called the Holy of Holies and only one man could enter and then only on a certain day once a year.  He offered the blood of the animal sacrifice to God by placing it on the Mercy Seat. Going behind the veil that separated man from the glory of God was so serious that the High Priest had to ensure he was clean before God.  He had to follow the guidelines or he would die.

Let’s look at what happened when Jesus died on the cross. Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent. When He died, the perfect sacrifice had been offered thereby giving us access to God.  The priests would have been in the temple to witness this because it was the time for the yearly sacrifices to God.  First, there was an earthquake.  Then the veil ripped in two from the top to the bottom.  Remember this was a large veil. No man could have reached the top of it.  God ripped it himself.  We have access to the Father because of and through Jesus.  We can call on the Father anytime.  It’s not done through me or any other person.  You and I can go ourselves.  I believe the Mercy Seat is in heaven.  Jesus went there taking his own blood and covered sin forever. I can call on Him anytime because the veil of sin was torn in two.  Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Only through Him may we gain perfection and get access to the Father.  His own blood appeased the wrath of God. It was the payment for sin.  Now we believe in Him and let Him apply the blood to our hearts.  This is what gives us access to God.

Hebrews 10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. 19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.  Because of Jesus we don’t go through a veil. We can boldly go to the throne of God. No priest is necessary. Entrance is through Jesus Christ.  He’s now our High Priest.  Verse 21 says And having an high priest over the house of God. All the High Priests in the Old Testament from Aaron on down represent Christ, showing a perfect High Priest was coming. We can’t go on our own merit.  It’s only through Jesus!

Does sin separate you from God?  Are there things in your life you need to let go?  If you have never been saved, call on His name today.  Repent of your sins and be saved.  You must; for without this you will not and cannot go to heaven.  Accept Jesus today.
