John 2:2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. 4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. 5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
Jesus and his disciples were called to attend a wedding. This is the first recorded miracle, and it shows how He felt about marriage. He thought it was sacred. Jewish weddings lasted seven days, and the host had to provide for the people for the entire week. To run out of anything was a disgrace. How many of us fall short of doing what we should? I admit that I do. The host had a problem and Mary, His mother, brought it to Jesus. He wasn’t being a smart alic in his answer to her. It wasn’t yet His time. He wasn’t there to glorify himself.
This was a clear problem. Jesus wants us to bring our problems, whatever they are, to Him. Mary recognized that Jesus could fix the problem. How many times do we think we can fix things ourselves? We could save ourselves a lot of headaches if we just go to Jesus first. Mary knew He could do it. She told the servants Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. What do I see here? DO IT! Whatever Jesus tells us to do, let’s do it. He has the answers. Don’t stand idly by. Do what He says. We’re human. We mess up, but Jesus chastises us when we don’t obey Him. There was a miracle in this story. I still believe in them. God still heals. I can’t, but He can. Nothing is impossible with God. The first thing we need to do is what He tells us. He tells us to spend time in prayer, time reading the Word, to come to His house, yet we’re so distracted. Then we don’t obey.
There were six stone waterpots that held over 100 gallons. Who’s the Rock? Jesus. The stone represents the old covenant. The servants filled the pots to the brim. This represents abundance. They were obedient. It was still water when they took it to the governor of the feast. Maybe they were nervous, and all of a sudden, it was wine; it represented the blood of Jesus. Sin abounds. That’s why people die. That’s why we’re all sinners. The blood is what saves and cleanses us from sin. They poured out the wine as Jesus poured out himself for us. He’s the source of the water of life. He had the solution to this very real problem even as He does our problems. Why aren’t we doing what He says? We have Him, the Water of Life, if we’re saved by God’s grace. Let’s pour it out so others see Jesus. Give more, beyond what He asks. Show the abundance of God. In verse 9 we know the governor didn’t realize what had happened. The servants did. We know when hard times come, we can go to Jesus. The governor commented that most families put the old stuff out at the end of the week when people have had a lot to drink. He wondered why the best was saved till the last. We have a new covenant. No animal sacrifices anymore because of what Jesus did on the cross. I’m here to tell you the best is yet to come for the saved.
I like weddings. Jesus started His earthly ministry at a wedding. They are important times in a person’s life. Two become one through love. This represents something far better. Jesus was a guest on this occasion. He’s saving the best for last. What is it? Revelation 21 tells us about another wedding called the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. It will be a time of jubilee. We’re ready to experience it. We now have real problems. Times are rough. Money problems are real. At the wedding to come, times will be perfect. We can rejoice because something better is to come.
Jesus and His disciples were invited. We’re invited to this wedding yet to happen. At that one, the groom will be Jesus. Something magnificent is going to happen. Remember Jewish weddings lasted seven days. This one will last seven years. It will be during the seven years of tribulation on the earth. A wedding procession will come down the streets of glory as the bride of Christ makes her entrance. The saints of God will be arrayed in white with the angels rising in tribute to the bride. Purified. Glorified. Purchased by His own blood. I believe we’ll shed happy tears. We’ve had happy times on earth. But then all the sufferings of earth will be gone. Earth will experience the judgment of God while we experience the best to come. Being a Christian is far better. We have enjoyed life. We’ve laughed and fellowshipped together. The best times we’ve had here will be as close to heaven as you’ll get if you don’t get saved. Even our best days will pale in comparison in heaven.
I don’t think John had words to describe what he saw. I don’t think Paul could explain what he saw. Imagine how great it’s going to be because Jesus is saving the best for last. He started with a wedding……and He’s going to have one at the end!
