The Price of Redemption

Ephesians 1:⁶ To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. ⁷ In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.

Sinners—we’re all sinners that need to be redeemed. The Person of Redemption is Jesus. His blood. Not baptism. We believe in that, but it doesn’t save us.  Not church membership. We should be part of a local church, but it doesn’t save us. It’s not in a new text. Not a Buddhist text or another religion’s text. It’s in the Bible—the Word—Jesus Christ. A person cannot be saved outside the truth of the Word. Whether it’s the KJV we use or a version written in Chinese or Spanish, God has preserved His Word. Turning over a new leaf doesn’t work. Most trade one kind of addiction for another. John 14:6 tells us we need Jesus Christ to be saved. He is the way, the truth, and the life. There is no other way. If a person doesn’t believe in Jesus, he will go to hell. Acts 4:12 says there is no salvation except through Him. Verse 7 of this text says, “in whom we have redemption.” Jesus.

Redemption is required. Man is in bondage to sin because of Adam’s fall in the Garden. We are the servants of sin. It is a draw for us and becomes our master. We think we can control it, but without Jesus we can’t. Before salvation we were of our father the devil. We were bound by the power, penalty, and presence of sin. Romans 6:23 says “the wages of sin is death.”  I owed a penalty I couldn’t pay. I couldn’t purchase my freedom any more than a slave in our early history could. A slave, on his own, couldn’t get out from under his master’s debt. Jesus is the pardon, the way out. It’s for everyone, not just a few. If Hitler had gotten saved, as wicked as he was, he would have gone to heaven. Anyone who accepts Jesus as Savior will go to heaven. The world is too stubborn to accept the pardon He offers. 

The price of our redemption?  The blood of Jesus. We can’t redeem ourselves. There isn’t enough gold or silver. It takes the blood of Jesus. Life is in the blood. Our life is in His blood. To redeem is to release by payment. Only His blood is pure enough to pay the price.  The product of redemption is the forgiveness of sins. I don’t have to pay the price. I owed more than I could pay. Jesus paid the debt. Psalm 103:12 says, “as far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”

What power is behind redemption?  Look back at the text. The riches of His grace. Grace is undeserved and keeps us from getting what we deserve. Accept grace by faith. Jesus considers us valuable enough to save. He thought we were worth the payment. Redemption wasn’t an emergency plan. God didn’t panic when Adam sinned. Long before that happened, the plan was set. The proof of redemption is that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again. His sacrifice was and is sufficient for the price of redemption.
