Blessed is the Nation Whose God is the Lord

Psalm 33:¹² Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. ¹³ The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men. ¹⁴ From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. ¹⁵ He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works. ¹⁶ There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. ¹⁷ An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. ¹⁸ Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; ¹⁹ To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. ²⁰ Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. ²¹ For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. ²² Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

What makes America great?  Is it not strength, not military, not wealth, or not even the Constitution.  I’m thankful for it. It says we are all equal and valued the same by God.  Our strength comes from depending on God.  The First Continental Congress sought God. They prayed as they convened to build a nation.  What documents they built were based on the Word of God.  Let’s look at what makes a nation blessed.

It chooses the right God:  the LORD.  Notice that it’s spelled in all caps. That is Jehovah, the most holy name of God. The Jews wouldn’t say it and spelled it without vowels. Why has the US been blessed for 250 years?  Our nation was founded on the LORD. God has favored us, allowed us to prosper. We are not perfect. There are stains in our history, but because we founded on the LORD, He blessed us.  

Our God is the LORD. The principles written to Israel will bless us if we follow them. When Israel was taken captive, it was because they forgot the LORD was their God.  Honor God, and He’ll bless us.  We need to turn back to God.  John Adams said the Constitution “will only work for a moral and religious people.”  We need hearts changed. If that happens there would be no need for abortion or alcohol laws. Morality cannot be legislated.  God’s job is changing hearts and that changes morality.  The laws of God are for morality.  This is what makes us free from sin as we follow them. Sin brings forth death. Let God change morality through the Holy Spirit and we can be brought back to God.

Not all our founders were believers. We’ve never been perfect. In the 1830’s there was great division that ended in the Civil War.  While it did get rid of slavery, 600,000 were killed. God has repeatedly shown mercy because our foundation is the LORD.  We need a spiritual awakening.  Politics change laws. God and the gospel changes hearts.  We see in verses 13-15 that the LORD watches it all from heaven. Nothing escapes the LORD.

The first great awakening was in the 1700’s. Men like Edwards and Whitfield broke from the Church of England preaching salvation through grace.  People got saved.  Forty years later, America declared liberty from Britain.  The second great awakening was in the early 1800’s and there was a strong emphasis on evangelism and missions. The US has sent more missionaries out than any other nation. The devil got wise, awakening the seeds of other religions that added to the Word of God.  We all need to be evangelists. It’s our job to work for Jesus. A genuine revival changes people, communities and nations.

Israel often trusted in their military. Look at verses 16-17. God told them not to do this saying not to trust their mighty number or horses, or strength. We can’t put our trust in B2 bombers. Trust God!  I’m thankful for those who serve our country, but our strength doesn’t lie there. A hacker could shut down our power or water grids. Technology has become our God.  Don’t forget WHO IS GOD:  the LORD.  God alone will preserve this nation. We have survived against incredible odds.  We should not have won those early wars.  God did it.  WWII is the last war we really won.  We pulled out of many, not really winning. We started to forget God.  He is the One who delivers.  He sustains those who trust in Him.

The foundation of the nation is the family; the devil is attacking the family hard.  In a strong family lies a strong church and community and state and nation.  If we get back to GOD and family with the Bible as our foundation, God will bless.  John 8:36 says If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. John Adams believed God. The right to do otherwise is in this nation, but they knew we need the LORD to be truly free.
