Daniel 5: 5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 22 And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this; 23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified: 24 Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written. 25 And this is the writing that was written, Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin. 26 This is the interpretation of the thing: Mene; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. 27 Tekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. 28 Peres; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
A crime often committed is forgery. That’s trying to write someone else’s signature on a document. No two people have the same handwriting. We all have different fingerprints and different DNA. Even identical twins have different DNA. No two of us are exactly alike. We’ve been here at the church long enough to recognize some people’s handwriting. When we get a card in the mail we sometimes know who it came from by recognizing the writing. Even the best forger doesn’t get it exactly right; there will still be a mistake.
God writes too. Before Adam and Eve came into existence there was a God with hands and feet. We were made in his image; we don’t make God into ours. God is everywhere at one time. Some use their hands to carve out a god but our God’s handwriting can’t be forged. He spoke to all the writers of the Old and New Testaments to give us a record of what he is saying. If what you think God is saying doesn’t match his Word, don’t trust your imaginations. Believe the Bible—the writing of God. Satan is a messenger of light and he tries to deceive people all the time. Don’t trust him. Trust God. We must believe the writers were inspired by God. He told them what to write and we can trust what it says as truth.
There have been times God came to earth and wrote. The first was when Moses went on the mountain to receive the Law of God. Everyone was warned not to even touch the mountain and Moses was commanded to walk up. God gave the Law to Moses written by the finger of God. We are invited to hear and read God’s Word now.
Another time was when the fingers of a man’s hand wrote on the wall at a dinner given by Belshazzar. God’s people were captives in Babylon but he didn’t leave them without truth. Daniel was one of the prophets. Belshazzar had a party for his friends. He felt completely safe. They were the biggest kingdom in the world. When Israel was taken captive the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed and his father Nebuchadnezzar took all the temple vessels and put them up. His son Belshazzar decided to have them brought up to the party.
The world can destroy this church off its foundation but God will still be on his throne. We carry the church wherever we go. The world may take the Bibles as Hitler did in Germany. Even though he did Christians in Germany met secretly praying for him to lose. We can look at many other countries throughout the Middle East and the world and see the martyrdom. What do these people pray for? That God will intervene.
Belshazzar was having his party and the fingers of a man’s hand started writing on the wall. We’re so convinced by the how the world runs to follow what’s trending. All the while God is writing and we say we don’t understand it. There are limits and boundaries that mankind can’t go beyond. Stop and look at the handwriting on the wall. It’s not just a hand but fingers. Consider whose writing then what he says. We are Christians because we were taught the Word of God through a witness, a preacher, a family member or friend and were exposed to the handwriting of God. We felt the finger of God on our heart. He stands at the door of our heart and knocks. Whatever walls we have up, back up and take a look at what he’s writing on the wall of your heart. It takes a fool to believe what the world is saying. You can’t trust me 100% and I can’t trust you. I can be wrong. You can be wrong. God is still writing plain as day.
God wrote on the wall behind the light in Belshazzar’s party room. That light was meant to bring revelry to the room. The message was there for all but it was there for Belshazzar. The question is not ‘is God writing?” Absolutely he is! What is he writing? Here he wrote a message of ending. Belshazzar had an idea it was bad. It was the last night of his kingdom. He thought he had many days and years to go. We’re all going to meet God and we need to take the time to read what God is saying. If we don’t know his finger, then we don’t know God. The night I got saved I could feel the writing of God and went forward. The pressure on my heart turned into joy.
What is God writing on your heart? It’s the truth and we need to respond. He wants a reply. He wants us to believe and call on his name. It’s up to you and between you and God and me and God.
