A Sure Foundation

Rev. Reynolds Frye brought the message.

II Timothy 2: 14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

I remember when I was out in sin.  The devil led me to and fro saying enjoy yourself and go on.  I didn’t have respect for anything.  I went to a revival and the preacher seemed to point right at me.  I made my way to an altar of prayer.  Without Jesus we’ll never be anything.  Jesus is the firm foundation, the right way that won’t sink.  If we stand on the Word we’ll find peace.  We hear about sinkholes all over, but the Word of God won’t sink.  It won’t fail.  We’ll make it through by the Word and grace of God Almighty.

The devil is cunning.  The Word declares I can tell Satan to get behind me.  When we stand on the Rock—the Lord Jesus Christ—we have a good foundation.  We can’t grasp the closeness of the coming of the Lord so we need to stand on his Word.  Let others know you stand on the Rock.  When the love of God abounds, iniquity does not.  The peace comes from knowing God and standing on his foundation.  The devil lies, and we don’t need to listen to him.

The Old Testament talks about King Nebuchadnezzar building an image 90 feet tall and 9 feet thick.  When the people heard the music they were to bow down and worship the image.  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not bow.  Some didn’t like it.  There are people who hate us because we worship God.  Those who didn’t like the fact that the three men didn’t bow told the king about it.  Faith moves mountains.  It moves kings.  It will take us through.  These boys declared they wouldn’t bow because they had a God.  They said, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.  The king told them they would go to the fiery furnace.

Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated. And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.  Sometime later the king looked inside and was surprised. Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counselors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.  He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

The men came out of the fire.  They didn’t smell like fire and their hair wasn’t singed.  Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.

It’s time to find out who God is.  It’s time to get self out of the way and let God have his way.  Jesus is our hope.  We need the realization there is no other God, no other hope.  We must let him touch us.  He is the firm foundation for life.  He will take us through.  If he is your helper, then you have hope.  If he is not, make your way to prayer. Let him guide and direct you in life.  He gives joy and peace.  Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and without him we have no help and no hope.
