Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Thanksgiving gives us joy and peace in our hearts. We should be thankful daily. Each breath is a blessing. The earth was created specifically for us, in ways we could live safely in it. He wants honor and praise from us. We do have trials and tribulations, but they will pass. True Christian living is woven with thanksgiving. If we would be more thankful, we’d do a lot better overall. Gratitude isn’t optional for us. We’re supposed to do it all the time, not just one special day a year.
Verse 15 says to let the peace of God rule in your hearts. The Greek word here for “rule” is a word that means umpire. Umpires rule. In our case peace rules out of our life what we don’t need. Our call is to let peace umpire our lives. Let the balls of anxiety and such go on by so peace can rule. Peace brings unity with each other. How? Talk to God and be thankful. Churches that pursue peace are thankful churches. Trials work together for our good. Thanksgiving is the posture of the heart. Without it there is no peace.
Verse 15 says Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. In the Greek “dwell” means to take up residence. Let the Work take up residence in your heart. Get into the Bible. The more time we spend with it and Him, the more thanksgiving will rule. As scripture reshapes our lives we’ll be more thankful. Sanctification takes time. Whatever is going on, sing anyway. Praise God anyway.
Verse 17 says that in everything we do, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus. Be thankful every day. We’re still here so God’s not done with us. Be thankful for souls we’re praying to see saved. Be thankful in all things. The world may think we’re crazy but do all we do for God with our whole heart. Looking down in verse 24 it is reiterated that we serve Jesus Christ. It’s by his authority, through his power and to his glory. When Jesus is the why in life, thanksgiving is the result.
