Killing Your Giants

The message was brought by Rev. Tim Powers on Aug 31, 2025.

I Samuel 17:49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

Most know the David and Goliath story.  A 5’5” Israeli boy faced an almost 10’ tall giant.  He was a soldier, a stocky guy. His armor weighed 125 pounds.  Even his spear probably weighed 30 pounds. For 40 days, this giant asked for a champion from Israel to fight him vowing that whoever won would serve the other.  Nobody from Israel would face him. We have giants in life that scare us as well.

Saul was the King and the tallest man in the land but he wouldn’t face him. David’s father sent him to the battlefield to take food to his brothers and heard Goliath. He instilled fear in them all.  It’s hard to face a giant. Job tells us that a person’s life is of few days and full of trouble.  Once a person is saved, the devil plays with our mind. No matter what it is–cancer, family illness–it’s hard. But it can be done.

Goliath cursed the God of Israel and that got to David.  Remember David wasn’t alone, and neither will we be.  In verse 29 he asked, “is there not a cause?”  There is!  Go to battle.  Face the giants.   We’re not here long.  Go tell the people about Jesus and what he can do. There is a cause and grace gets us through.

34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: 35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. 36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. 37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.

Look at the progression.  A lion may come up in preparation for something bigger later on.  God was preparing David; he is preparing us. In his downtime I see him practicing with that sling.  How do we practice?  Read and study the Bible. It’s the living Word of God and after two thousand years people are still reading it.  It is our ammunition to fight. Be obedient to God and you can slay your lions.  Next to come was a bear. David killed it. God was still preparing him for something bigger. God will be preparing us until he comes.

In the next few verses, we find Saul giving David his armor. It was too big for David, and he hadn’t proved it. What the world gives you won’t work, and it always has something to throw at you for an answer.  This will get you in trouble. David knew his strength was not in armor.  Ours is not in Trump or any other man. All of us can fall.  Don’t look at the world. God is all we need.  We need more David’s who will say “NO” to the world and stand up for God.  Put on the armor of God!

In verse 40 we see David picking up five stones.  I’ve heard messages preached on these stones. Do you know that five is the number of grace?  I want to say that David took five in case he missed.  I may sling against my giant and miss.  What should I do?  Reload and shoot again.  Get a new battleplan from the Word. Pray more. Go at it again.  Keep on slinging that sling.  If needed, go again.  Sling the stones and don’t give up.  If you fail; if you fall, ask forgiveness and keep on going.  God’s grace is as sufficient for us as it was for Paul.  Cling to grace. Have faith.

Goliath was claiming victory. David said he was coming in the name and power of God.  The giant laughed as David started swirling that sling around and around and ran toward him.  Sometimes we have to run toward our giants and face them. God gave David the victory. Face the giants.  Goliath died that day.  Giants can be killed.

In verses 51-54 we read that David took Goliath’s head to Jerusalem as a testimony of what God had done.  Our testimony is what we bear and can tell all about how God helped us face a giant. God saw David through. He’ll show us through.  Your giant has a weak spot just like Goliath did. He was armed all over except between his eyes. That’s where David’s stone struck him. The devil may seem like a giant not to be defeated. God is preparing you for something bigger in what you go through today.  Get into the Word. Learn more about Jesus so you can face the giants of your day…..and kill them!
