Sing the Lord’s Song

The message was brought by Rev. Avery Sheets on 3/20/25.

Psalms 137:1-4 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.  We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.  For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.  How shall we sing the Lord‘s song in a strange land?

The Lord’s song is from the heart and you must be in fellowship with God to sing it. Israel, at this time, was not. They had sinned and were captive in a strange land away from Israel.  What happened to them and can happen to us?  The flesh says go this way. The Holy Spirit says no. God knows the end from the beginning. We don’t. If I knew that I would not have taken some of the paths in life that I took. I’m glad I didn’t go too far and end up in jail somewhere. Aren’t you glad for the grace of God!  He watches over us trying to direct our paths. Our flesh wants to go the wrong way. Thank God he loved me even while I went away from his will. He still loved me. He was still merciful.

There are still paths ahead for all of us that we’ll take or not take. The devil wants us to take the wrong one. Don’t go down those paths. Cain never saw himself a murderer, but by not bringing a blood sacrifice to the Lord he followed the path of jealousy against his brother and later killed him. God, keep us from jealousy. It can split a church through disunity.  Samson didn’t see his eyes being put out when he told Deliha his heart. He followed the path and pillow of lust. The Bible says to not love the world or the things of the world. He had taken a Nazarite vow and therefore couldn’t cut his hair. This signified a person’s consecration to God in that day. He fell because he revealed that his strength lay in that. Take heed of this:  when you think you’ll never fall, you will. I pray God will bring us out of lukewarmness. Are you in a strange land spiritually? You can’t sing the Lord’s song.  Achan followed the path of covetousness. He, and his whole family, paid for his disobedience to God. The prodigal son didn’t see himself in a hog pen when he left home.

We need a devil cleaning as a child of God. We are to walk in the Spirit. We need to repent of walking on the wrong paths. When we’re cold and indifferent to the things of God, we need to call on him. We lose the song in our heart when we get off on the wrong path. Pray that God will put you and me on the right paths we need to be on. He knows all about us; he knows where we need to be. If you have taken a wrong path, God is waiting. Come pray today and get back where God wants you to be.  And if you’ve never been saved and put on the right path, come today in repentance and God will save you. Then you can sing the Lord’s song.
