The Promise of His Coming

II Peter 3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: 2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Jesus said time after time he was coming back. As he ascended into heaven the angel looked down and reminded the number of followers there that the same Jesus they were seeing ascend would come again in like manner. In John 14 Jesus said Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. Many passages are in prophecies as well as in the words of Jesus.

These are promises to take to heart. If you are saved, you know you’re saved by the Word and believing on the Lord Jesus Christ and trusting him as Savior. We have a know-so salvation. We know the promises the Lord makes, he keeps. One of those promises is that he will come again. He said he would. Don’t get disillusioned. Don’t get deceived. It doesn’t matter even if you hear another Christian say he’s not coming. We hear all sorts of accusations about him at times. It appears he’s so guilty of lots of things. We have to watch this and not take heed and get discouraged by others. So many allowed the world to get to them. They may still say they believe he’s coming but deep down in discouragement say that it’s been over 2,000 years. There’s no sign of his coming.

Many in the first century thought Jesus would come then. Peter addressed this. He wrote this only about 30 years after Jesus left and people were already discouraged. We are fully aware of the times and seasons. Factors have been fulfilled, but we don’t know the day and hour of his return. Back 2,000 years ago the time was already set. All I know is that it’s a whole lot closer now than it was then. The time hasn’t been changed. It’s still set. When the time arrives the rapture will take place. Judgement of God will be poured out.

In spite of how brilliant man is and the advancement of the times, he will come and we don’t know when. We have no idea exactly how advanced times were before Noah. There was advancement and we know their wickedness was hand in hand with it. The same is seen today. The increase of knowledge is evident. The Bible says people will run to and fro. It’s already Jan 2, 2019. Before we know it July 4 will be here. In another pause we’ll be putting up our Christmas trees again. The signs are fulfilled and God has made the promise.

Two thousand years is a long time. I’ve only been here 64 and that seems long to me. We can’t think in human terms. Time matters not with the Lord. He said I WILL come again. Where is the promise of the Lord’s coming? Where is the promise of the Lord’s coming? I turned the radio on to some news today and the person was going on about the change in freedom of speech. You can’t say anything about anybody or their religion, except a Christian. You can tell all the jokes you want about Christians, Republicans or the President. If you even come close to a joke about anyone else you’ll be in trouble. No wonder there is such chaos. Wickedness goes hand in hand with the increase of knowledge. There may be knowledge but there is less wisdom as man drives himself further into sin. Christians are the brunt of all sorts of jokes. The main one is ‘where is the promise of his coming?’ Why is the stock market failing? God didn’t make the stock market. Man is cursed because of sin and the only remedy is the blood of Jesus Christ and salvation by faith in him.

You and I are the fulfillment of a promise. He said whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. He kept that promise.  He’ll keep others. Don’t join the scoffers. We’re not to fight. Jesus said his kingdom was not of this world. We are to be lights and examples. God is real. His word is true. There is a genuine salvation in the Lord and only him. He made the promise that he’s coming again.  Let people scoff. Some have even said to me that because he didn’t come in 2,000 that they don’t believe he is coming. That’s crazy. I’m glad he didn’t come in January 1972. That was only three months before I got saved. I’d be in the lake of fire now. Thank God!

This is the truth of God. Peter said God is not slack concerning his promise. He’s coming back and that’s not a mistaken doctrine. Some things in the Bible are argued but you can’t argue this. It’s not a mistake. Jesus flat out said he’d save us if we call on him. He said he was coming back and the forces of evil cannot stop it. Don’t believe it hasn’t happened by now because the devil was able to prevent it. When the Father gives the command, the trumpet will sound. There is nothing that can prevent it.

This is important to remember. He is not slack concerning this promise. Tune the devil out and the Lord in. Verse 9 said BUT he is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. It’s not that there is just a day set off the wall. It is intentional. God is being extra good to this undeserving world and us undeserving Christians.

Have you served him as you should have in 2018? God is being longsuffering to give us more time in our relationship with him. We look around and think people can’t be reached, but the fact that Jesus hasn’t come means people can still be saved. We need to shine our lights. It’s a call for us. The coming is so nigh. The times are so evil. We need to be a faithful witness. God’s grace is the reason he hasn’t come. We have another day to serve God better. God is not slack. How slack are we? God will keep his promise. Let’s keep ours.
