The Very Christ

It’s long been believed by the Jews that the Messiah would come at the time of the feast of the tabernacles when the blowing of the trumpets takes place. We’re about to enter that time of year. I just know that Jesus could come at any time and Jerusalem is our compass. Jesus was at the feast and the people were speaking about him. There was confusion but Jesus wasn’t confused. He spoke to them. It’s not just what he said but what others said about him.

John 7:23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? 24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. 25 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill? 26 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? 27 Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is. 28 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. 29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

I like what they said in verse 26: Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?  This subject has had more debate than any other. Ungodliness is ruling but like Norma said it gets worse every year. I never thought I’d see the time when it would be negative and un-American to even talk about God. I never thought it would be this offensive. How can it get worse? But is can and does.

Many have claimed to be the Messiah, the Savior, but they weren’t. When there was no individual claiming such things people started making ordinary men into saviors. They spoke of avenues for harmony with life and nature. People will worship anything but the true God. There is still only one God yet people seek fame, glory, and riches. It’s nothing new. The devil tempted Eve and Adam telling them that eating the forbidden fruit would give them more knowledge than God. That’s why they gave in. They believed the lie of the devil and people are still eating the fruit of that lie today. This is the day of idolizing others. Virtue and truth are out the door. Celebrities are idolized. Who are they? There is no good, decent show on television. Everyone wants to be a singing or athletic idol. We were all fools before we were saved. I don’t want you to follow me. Follow the Lord. Everyone follows either the Lord or the devil. You can’t serve both at the same time.

The people were confused. They didn’t know if Jesus was Christ or not. The leaders said nothing. Even at this early time in his ministry they already wanted rid of Jesus. The world has always tried to be rid of him. But God is still God and the devil is still a fallen angel on his way to the lake of fire. I want to be a follower of Jesus Christ. He’s the only one to lead us to heaven. If we follow him we have eternal life. Only Jesus delivers; only he is the VERY Christ. We seek a higher power. We are not that higher power. Without Jesus we are fallen and can’t get higher, not on our own. The only one who can raise us up is Jesus Christ, the one who died and rose up from the dead. We are risen with Christ as believers.

Some said Jesus was a good man. Some said he was a deceiver. Verse 13 tells us that some were afraid to say; it wasn’t politically correct. They were afraid of what others would think. That kind of thinking will take you to hell. The only correctness we need is being right with God. In verse 15 they questioned his learning. The thought him just an ignorant carpenter from Nazareth. So much about Christians is made fun of in today’s society. Most of the time on television shows a Christian is presented as an ignorant person. Some employers trust Christians less than others; it ought to be the other way around. It’s all right. We’re left here for a purpose. We’re all given life by God and have a soul that Jesus came to save. I’d rather be considered ignorant and know the living God. Man’s opinions about God do not change who he is.

Jesus said Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. They knew he came from Nazareth. They knew his mother was Mary. Joseph was not his father, only the stepfather to help raise him. Jesus is the only begotten son of God. Sure, they knew the story. You may be familiar with the story and the Bible but knowing it is a different matter. I thank God I know Jesus Christ as Savior. Jesus didn’t boast of himself. He spoke of God and said But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. BUT I KNOW HIM. There is no excuse for nothing knowing who Jesus is. The devil knows. The question is not who are you Jesus? It’s who am I?

Little words sometimes have great impact. Jesus is the VERY Christ. Very = the same person as the title says. Very = complete–not 10% or 20% or 99.999% but 100%. The devil deceives, but not Jesus. He is complete, the actual and proven Christ. It wasn’t what he aspired to be; it’s what he WAS AND IS. You don’t have to wait for him to do something else to save you. He’s the actual Savior now. He cannot improve on what he already is and you cannot improve yourself. Trust in his proven success as Savior. Jesus demonstrated what he can do by his healing of a paralyzed man on the Sabbath. We can experience God in body and soul. We’ll make it through to the end by the grace of God.

What conclusion do you draw? Reach the only real one you can. Jesus:  he is the VERY CHRIST!
