Matthew 18:19-20 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Being a Bible Christian is not territorial. Often people will think that others in different sections of the country aren’t Christians. Why, there could never be a Christian in New York. God’s throne won’t be here in Smyth County or Washington or Buchanan. I’m glad I don’t have to handle snakes. What we all need is for God to handle us.
Many take this scripture and think if they can get someone to agree with them on something that it will happen. Before the Lord will grant our requests we must agree on maintaining a right relationship with him. We don’t merit the good he does for us. If is only in his goodness. We won’t merit revival. It will be God’s response to you and me agreeing with him. Too often people won’t respond to God. They want to come to the altar to pray but what if no one else comes? What will people think? Listen. If you need to come, come. Others shouldn’t stand back and look at whose come wondering what they’ve done. Too often people come to church, say “bless me, Lord” and go home unchanged. That’s what’s wrong.
Revival indicates that something is missing. It shows carnality. Carnality is not a word to apply to the lost. That is a term for Christians who act like brats when they know better. It’s for Christians who want to be bullies, or be jealous or mad at others. We need to get our eyes off everyone else and look at our own heart. Realize that we all need to open our hearts to each other and be connected. Know you’re in need but that others are as well.
Yes. Jesus said that if any two agree it will be done. Do you respect others enough to agree with them? It’s not all about getting everyone to agree with you. You’re not the only righteous one here. Until we realize our own faults and failures, until we see the brat in ourselves we can’t agree. Is there a bully in you? I’m the worst one here. I don’t know any of you well enough to say that about you, but I do know myself. The greatest with God will be the one who humbles himself or herself before the Lord and is completely honest with him. They will agree with their brothers and sisters that all are in need of God. All I can do is call on God and agree with others who do the same.
This scripture is not a blank check to us. The result of two agreeing is in verse 20. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. It won’t happen until two agree. If I humble myself to agree with you and you humble yourself to agree with me, it will happen. Can we agree that we all need revival? You and I both need it. Only in this unity will God be in our midst. Only in this bond together will it happen. In the midst is God between you and me. I need to get down low with the Lord. What about you? If any two of us agree to do that, God will be in our midst.
