Standing by the Cross

John 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

The Apostle John wrote this firsthand.  When the others wrote they weren’t the ones on the hill with Jesus like John was.  Judas was dead and in hell as Jesus suffered. Here we see some were still sticking with the Master.  When Jesus looked around what a comfort it must have been to see his mother.  Mary gave birth to God, her own Redeemer.  God was the Father and he chose Mary to send his son.  She wasn’t sinless just obedient to God.  She was completely submissive.  In all the pain of the cross she was going to stick with him no matter what.

Mary’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene were there.   Jesus intended to take care of his mother.  He provides for his own.  John was the only one of the 12 who went with Jesus all the way.  Peter was next but he followed afar off and it got him into trouble.  When he denied the Lord the third time Jesus turned and looked at him.  Peter ran away and wept bitterly.  John stood by not just in the courtyard, the trial and before Pilate but all the way to the cross.  A company of women followed him all the way to the cross.  They stuck with him.

People today are scared to death to stand by Jesus.  Those who stood by Jesus that day did so at their own risk.  They were all-the-way-believers.  It was his most dangerous time making it theirs as well.  They didn’t budge and they were not harmed.   While on the cross Jesus said to his mother “woman, behold thy son.”  Jesus isn’t ignoring her and won’t ignore us either.  He looked at John and son “behold thy mother.”  John knew what that meant and from that time took over the care of Mary.

These were the ones who helped Joseph and Nicodemus get Jesus’ body to the tomb.   They stood by the cross.  Before we can do that we must stand in the cross.  We’re to stand true and be a witness.  The Lord took care of them and he will us.  Let’s just stand by Jesus and the cross.
