Galatians 4: Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. 3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: 4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. 8 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
Matthew 1: 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Think about Christmas. God’s son was born. Consider this. Jesus was from everlasting to everlasting yet he was born and had a birthday. For 33 years the family remembered his birth. No doubt his followers knew his birthday. This tells us how like us Jesus wanted to be. Because he had a birthday we have a spiritual birthday. Here at the church we recognize people on their physical birthdays but we also celebrate the spiritual ones. It’s all possible because Jesus was born. He came to the level of having a birthday.
The thought came to me today. What have I got to give Jesus for his birthday? What do you give someone who has everything? It’s amazing to think Jesus was willing to have a birthday. He deserves a gift.
God sent his son into the womb of Mary. The Holy Ghost touched her humanity. Conception is a miracle anyway you look at it and this one blows the mind. Children look like their mothers in some way and their fathers in others. I’m sure we’ll see a resemblance between Jesus and Mary. Still those who saw Jesus saw something different. The shepherds saw it—God with us. Jesus is the same as Joshua in name. God used Joshua to lead Israel in the conquest of the promised land. Jesus led us to conquer sin and the adversary so we can live in victory.
The angel instructed Mary and later Joseph. They had no personal intimacy with each other until after Jesus was born. When the people saw Jesus they knew he was different. The wise men brought gifts. They had consulted the stars and studied the prophecies. They knew the invisible God was somewhere. When a new star appeared they knew it was different. When they got to Jerusalem they didn’t ask if a baby had been born. They knew the King of the Jews had been born. Ahead of his birth, much like a baby shower, they got their gifts together and headed out on their trip.
I’m thankful for the 33 birthdays Jesus had because of what he accomplished for us. Think about what he’d like from you. It can’t be bought at Walmart. All we have to do is give. Jesus paid a great price and paid it in full so we could have a spiritual birthday. Ask what he wants and give it to him. Celebrate his birth every day. Whatever you give, it will be worth it.
