Through the years Satan has worked and succeeded with deception. Years ago the methods were obvious. Now it’s more widespread because of the information age. Before the internet Satan used any means he could. Technology is good; if not for it we wouldn’t have electricity. Many of us remember black and white television. Old magazine advertisements don’t have a .com on them. Technology is a good way to promote the gospel. How could many of the prophecies come to pass without the internet and its ability to get the gospel to remote parts of the world? There is also a lot of evil but the choice exists for truth to be chosen. Jesus knew all about this long before we did. He knows everything beginning to ending. If we choose God he can help us have the right discernment.
Just take the two shootings today. One group was targeted because they were of a certain political party. Deception is very forthright these days. We need to remember that our hope is not in a president, no matter who it is. In today’s society laws, and even history itself, are in the trash can. Churches are getting away from the Bible thinking it has to adjust to suit people. It doesn’t change for us; we change to suit it. Since salvation there is a desire to live right because our hope is only in Jesus Christ.
Now days there are many forms of “Christianity” and it’s not about what is right but what is all right with people. New versions of the Bible lead people to confusion. God anointed men to write and give us his Word. The one who spoke it is perfect. God’s Word is infallible. We can question it all we want but God will have the last word.
I John 4: 1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
When we got saved we knew it. We got to the point of accepting Jesus as Savior through the Word. We put our faith in Jesus Christ. It’s real. When the voices of deception come, remember the Bible is not just a viewpoint. It’s a way of life. It was good enough for the old saints. Jesus went back to heaven 2,000 years ago and he waits on us to call on his name. You don’t pray to a person or a statue. Just get alone with the Lord and pray. He hears and answers.
The devil is called by many names, among them dragon, Satan and adversary. His name was Lucifer before he fell. He’s the accuser, but the name we have to watch is angel of light. He quotes, rather misquotes, scripture to us. He even did that to Jesus. He appears okay when in fact he is not. Jesus set aside his divinity and came back against Satan’s attacks with the Word reminding Satan with “it is written.” We can all get broadsided by the devil. Read the Word to get it cleared up.
We have what we need to overcome Satan. Make the distinction. Verse 5 says they are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We live in this world but we don’t have to be deceived by the god of this world. We are in the same body we’ve always had but we have something new, a new nature. We received it when we got saved. We cannot believe everyone. Test what they claim by God’s Word. The devil is the great counterfeiter. Look before you leap. Don’t fall prey to emotionalism. I’ve seen preachers get a whole congregation worked up when what they were saying didn’t even agree with the Bible. Jesus worked miracles but his work was to become the Savior of our soul. You may get sick. Don’t give up on God. I’d rather have the Lord and die young than live a long healthy life and die and go to hell.
Try—which means test—the spirits. Verse 2-3 say every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God. It’s that simple. Remember this too. We can overcome because of what verse 4 tells us. Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
