Follow Your Leader

Playing follow the leader as a child can put you in some great fixes.  It all depends on who the leader is.  Our nation has fallen into sin to a depraved level.  We see a world that constantly pushes people to do their own thing and believe what they want but when some don’t follow right along with it they are ostracized.  We’re all led by a master and we can’t serve two of them.  We’ll be loyal to one or the other but not both.  God said we can’t serve him and this world system.  Our Savior is a thoroughly capable Savior.  We have a leader that will stick with us all the way.  Our God is faithful.  One of our greatest blessings is to have a leader in whom it is save to put our whole trust in.  God will never let us down.  He is my leader and yours.  Our sum duty is to trust and follow him.

Romans 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

God is so much greater and higher than we are.  In him we find purpose and reason for existence.  There is a sovereign God on the throne and his son is the Good Shepherd who cares for the sheep.  As such he’ll not lead us in circles.  He can get us through this world to heaven.  He leads with that intention.  I’ve seen people tear a church all to pieces all the while saying the Lord is leading them.  You can’t just say the Lord leads when what you do is contrary to his Word.  When the Word says it’s wrong, God will not lead a person there. He leads us by and through his Word.  If what you feel led doesn’t follow the Word, don’t trust your feelings.  Our human nature is deceitful.  If we’re going to be led by the Shepherd, we must follow the Bible.  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  There is a great need among people to realize that God leads according to his Word.  It is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.

So many proclaim to be Christians and follow their own interpretations and lead others astray.  Let’s not do that.  Teach others how to follow not by just telling them but also by example.  Paul said for people to follow him as he followed Christ.  Are we following the Lord so closely that we could make that statement?  Peter followed the Lord afar off and denied even knowing him.  The times behoove us to follow closely, not far off.  For our sake and the sakes of those around us, follow as close as you can.  Only those who recognize the Leader as Leader can follow him.  God help us to follow our Leader.

Why can’t we be trusted to lead ourselves?  We need the help of the Lord and the mind of Christ.  We need Jesus to be our eyes and on watch for what’s ahead.  The devil leads people into the depths of hell further into the darkness.  You can follow anything—religion or not.  They all promise a better life whether it’s the government or Hollywood; they say follow us.  It’s a lie with the blind leading the blind.  Our Leader is not blind and he has opened our eyes.  Follow the Leader!  We simply cannot trust ourselves to do the right thing because of the battle with our own human nature BUT God will lead if we follow.  He’ll get us through if we let him be in charge.  Many are following false doctrine; they get preacher religion.  Some are caught up in tradition.  This is God’s house not mine, and the only way I have a claim to a spot here is through God.  We cannot have a relationship with him if we don’t want to follow him.

He’s the deliverer.  He keeps his promises.  All who yield to being led by him will make it home.  We’re pilgrims and strangers here, but he who knows us best loves us most.   Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.  Whatever the future holds I can’t make it without following the Leader.  It’s the only thing, the safe thing, to do.  At best we’re sheep who need to stay in line by following the Leader.  Don’t set what you know to be right aside to follow after the next big thing.  Follow the Lord.  To be led means we must be willing to follow.
