I Corinthians 3: Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you? 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: 3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. 4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
To explain our purpose as Christians and how vital we are is why Paul wrote this portion of scripture. We’re important to God but we’re important to the world. What a picture of how to please God and our mission in life. Paul asked the people of Corinth if they needed further letters of commendation to trust what they were told to be truth. There is so much we can’t trust anymore. We used to trust education. The devil has worked his way into schools and colleges. When kids go off to school it takes a strong faith to make it. People get brainwashed. When I was lost, even seeing a church steeple stirred me. There was a certain respect and fear. People have lost their fear of God. Paul told them he and the other apostles had proven themselves. They had read the Word and were showed by their lives what truth is. The testimony of the lips must be backed up by behavior. It matters what we think and say but we have to demonstrate it. There is no day off being a Christian and our life is to show what we are.
There are so many perversions of the Bible made to suit someone. When they stand before God it will be his unchanged Word they are judged by. There won’t be another Word to come. Christianity is not another religion. There is one God, one Savior, and one Bible. It’s our duty to get the Word into our being. All the Corinthians needed to know was in the letters written to the churches. They got passed around. If we don’t make our life a living epistle we’ll miss out. That’s how we show people our God. Think you can’t do a good job of talking? Remember people are looking. They do listen to what we say but it doesn’t do much if we don’t back it up by what we do.
What did Paul say to Titus? He told him the people of God are to be a peculiar people. We should stand out to the world. Christians are to be living epistles of God. Let the teachings of God guide and steer. If it brings us to a halt, then all we can do is fall to our knees. He’ll show us through his Word. It is the path of life. We can’t be both horse and rider. We’re the horse of God. We can’t bridle our own teeth. Let God ride and be the guide. I’d rather any day be bridled to the Savior than bound to the devil. He steers people to hell.
It’s not a burden to be an epistle for the Lord. It’s a privilege. When the Word is in your heart because you’ve studied it, it will come to you by instinct when you let God have the reins. We’ll do and accomplish the right thing. We’re the only Bible some may read. There are some who try to trip us up. Stay true to the Lord and you’ll know how to answer. The devil tries to confuse us. Turn around and confuse him with the Word. Jesus didn’t use his divine power against the devil in the wilderness. He took the written Word Israel already had and used it. The devil couldn’t answer back.
The only way people will be saved is through the gospel of Jesus Christ. We just need to demonstrate and put it into action. Be living Bibles. Be what the Bible tells us to be. With Jesus holding the reins we’ll make it through. Sometimes we might need a switching from God to pick up the speed. We hold the greatest opportunity of any generation. God wants to move us along. Face the world. He told us to go into all the world and teach all nations. The only way is through our witness and our life. Do others see upside priorities when they look at us? Is Jesus last instead of first? Do we stumble for words to answer the questions about God? If Jesus is guiding your life, ask for his help. He’ll show you how to reflect God.
In the book of Acts people were won to the Lord because they saw God in the apostles. We are couriers of hope to a lost and dying world. When they read us, what do they see? Is your epistle showing a reckless life? If people can’t see Jesus, our talk won’t do any good. We are declared to be living epistles not in tables of stone but of the heart. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God. If you’re not certain of talents and gifts, that’s not what it’s about. All you need is dedication to the Lord. Let him have the reins of your life. Wear his bit and let him turn you how he chooses.
It’s a high honor to be a living epistle for God. Be open to the world. We’ll see change in others and maybe win one more soul. Does God like what he reads in your epistle? If he needs to erase and rewrite, come to him. Let him proofread your life and then go forth as an epistle of God.
