The chaos is getting worse. Civilization is losing its order. When something starts falling apart it happens slowly and then it hits hard. The Twin Towers were weakened. No one thought they would fall but while we watched, the heat was working. All of a sudden the towers were down. The state of the world is crumbling. In the midst of the falling apart there is still solidity, something sound, something that makes sense. It has stood generations of wickedness. The building of God still stands. Don’t look on things we see but at what we can’t. One person can be counted on. He is the head of the corner. Everyone needs to consider where they are in relation to the corner.
I Peter 2: 4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
It was now many years later. Peter was in prison. His execution was coming. He would be crucified, and at his request, it would be done upside down instead of the way Christ was. This was truth that all needed to hear, even the enemies of the gospel. In Jesus the scriptures were fulfilled. He was the stone the builders rejected. They chose something else to build their lives on. The very stone that was rejected became the only foundation for life.
If you want any happiness and security, it must be through Jesus. There is no other foundation to be laid. Every life without Jesus falls flat. By choosing other foundations people fail. You can call it whatever you like. Sin is still sin. Truth is still truth. Before a building can start, the dirt has to be cleaned out so the foundation can be laid. We have to dig down and willingly accept Jesus Christ. We can build but without Jesus we won’t stand the test of time or the judgment. In order to be right with God you have to give up your sins. Changing the definitions of sin doesn’t help. We won’t stand before God with our buddies.
New versions of Christianity come out all the time. Jesus said many will cry out in that day about all the things they did for him but the Lord will say “depart.” The only way to be right depends on our proximity to the corner. Politicians aren’t the head. Hollywood isn’t the head. Jesus Christ is the head. When we call on him he saves us. We can’t just profess knowing him. It must begin in the heart. When we let him become our Savior he saves from the heart out. We can build a different life and talk a different talk. While others sink we’ll walk a sure line. Sometimes the path is asphalt; sometimes it’s gravel and a little bumpy. Sometimes there are ruts and potholes. Regardless of how rough, if we ride with Jesus and let him do the driving he’ll get us through.
People may look down on you for being a Christian but you have something they don’t—a sure foundation. Don’t walk away from it. The path might get slippery but we don’t have to slip and fall away. Nothing makes better sense than to build on Christ. Isaiah tells us that the Lord says come and let’s reason together. Jesus has made sense of our life. With our trust in the Lord and our feet on him as our foundation, we’ll make it.
Jesus came to save us from hell, to lay a stone in Zion. He is the cornerstone. A cornerstone is what holds two walls together. It makes a strong wall. That makes a strong building. He is essential to keep our wall up and from the others that want to crush us. The forces of hell can’t prevail against the cornerstone of Jesus Christ. There is only so far the devil can come. Jesus will keep us standing. We can trust him. Regardless of what the world says, he’s still the only foundation. Let him make your life sure.
