This is the Second Death

Revelation 20: 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

These are some of the most frightening verses in the Bible.  We read them and pass right on by because of the image they create in our minds.  We know these to be the truth, an accurate description of the future for those who are not saved.  Many refuse to believe it.  We’ve seen a slacking of the belief in hell and the lake of fire, the second death.  Some half believe it saying people go there, burn up, and it’s done with.  That’s a nice thought to hold onto, but it’s not so.   Even though some religions teach it, it is not true.  They think the moment of paying for sin is quick.  If not for verse 8 we might think that.  It says and the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.  ARE is key.  This happens many years after the beast and false prophet are put there.  They are still there and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.  It never burns out.

People come up with every reason not to be saved but right here is the reason.   There are plenty of reasons to be saved but this trumps them all.  If every person got a glimpse of eternity that’s coming they’d run to call on the Lord.  Jesus was plain.  It wasn’t an allegory.  There will be fire.  We’re supposed to have record temperatures today, but that is nothing compared to the fire of hell and the lake of fire.  They are different.  The rich man opened his eyes in the flames of the torment of hell.  The time is coming that the second resurrection will happen.  Souls from hell will meet with their bodies and come together for judgment.  They’ll see how they could have been saved.  Because their names are not written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, they went to hell upon death.  The only way to get your name written in this Book is for Jesus to put it there.  He does that when you ask for forgiveness of sin and live for him.  When we ask Jesus to save us, yes he saves us from sin; however, we are also saved from going to hell.  When a person chooses to go on in his sin, he chooses hell by default. When a person stops to consider God instead of the devil, the reality of hell comes to light.

People change their beliefs at the drop of a hat.  God’s Word is still the same.  God is the same, still the beginning and the end.  His Word is forever settled in heaven.  I don’t know why people continue to believe lie after lie of the devil.  He has many ways to provide avenues of deceit.  The advance of technology allows much of it to happen.  People choose to believe the devil instead of God. The Supreme Court may rule in a certain way on many things, but a higher court has already ruled.  God’s way will prevail no matter how governments and society think about things.

Who goes to hell?  Revelation 21:8 gives us the answer.  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.  Those afraid to be saved because of what others may say.  Those who are good moral people but just don’t believe go to hell.  The good and abominable go to hell with the rest who don’t believe.  Liars—all of them—go to hell.  Do you live a consistent with your belief?  Are you careful to walk by faith so that your life is not a lie?  You don’t fool God.  Names are either in the Book of Life or not.

Think of a lake full of fire and brimstone.  Brimstone is hot molten sulfur.  It’s outer darkness.  People go there because they do not accept Jesus as Savior.  They will be away from the sins that brought pleasure.  All that is taken to eternity is the soul.  What is done with Jesus follows.  Satan and every vile and evil person are in hell.  All suffer.  Have you seen someone burned in an accident?  It’s awful but hell will be so much worse.  The body won’t be like it is now.  The soul is what’s saved, not the body.  Our soul will be visible outside the body. No physical burning will ever compare to a soul that burns.

Revelation 2:11 says he that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.  We’re fearful of what may come upon us but Jesus said not to fear.  Suffering may happen for a while in this life, but a person who has been saved will not suffer in the life to come.  Some are having it easy now, and that won’t be the case in eternity.  The rich man in the Bible had barns full of goods.  He said he was going to relax and take his ease.  Jesus called him a fool and said that very night his soul would be required.  I’d rather have heaven in the next life and nothing now.  If we gain the whole world and lose our souls we have nothing.

People will go to hell and the lake of fire.  It won’t be God’s fault.  Mom and dad can’t be blamed.  You’ll not get by with blaming it on the hypocrites.  The choice is all mine and yours.  Nobody has to be in hell and the lake of fire.  The occupants turned down heaven and chose hell when they said no to Jesus.  The second death causes hurt.  Hell and the lake of fire are not comparable to anything we know.  I hurt enough.  I don’t want to sin my life away.  We need to be ready.  Get closer to Jesus.  Make sure everything is lined out between you and God.  The choice is yours.
