Why “In God We Trust”?

Hebrews 6: 17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

America is outlawing every reference to God trying to step on true Christian people.  It’s surprising that “In God We Trust” is still on our currency.  The size of the text is smaller but it doesn’t downsize God.  I’m thankful I can safely trust in the Lord.  Every time they talk of removing the motto from our money it goes nowhere.  It speaks of a time when this nation trusted God.  As a nation we don’t do that anymore, but many people still trust him.

The statement is a warning.  We should trust in God.  It tells us that money isn’t trustworthy.  When trust is only in material things it is very sad.  One day the dollar will go flat.  It’s on its way out.  Gold value could go down.  You can’t trust it.  Trust in such things fades fast.  We’re asked to trust this one and that one, this way or this agenda.  It all fails because the ones making them can’t keep the promises.  If we trust in anything else but God we will fail.  God is the only one who has always kept his promises.  He’ll never lose his value or power.  He’ll never change or need a re-assessment of his value.  It if wasn’t for God and salvation we’d be lost.  God kept his word and that’s why we’re here today.

Verse 18 says that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.  God means what he says and says what he means.  He backs it up.  Verses 13-14 tell us for when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. The dollar is nothing but paper.  God backs up what he says by himself because there is none greater.  Abraham and Sara were well beyond child-bearing age.  How could God keep this promise of a son?  He cannot lie.  He does not change.  His promises of 4,000 years ago are still true today.  They don’t need altering for the times.  What was good for Peter, James and John is still good.  It is still timely.  He’ll never fail or get weary.  People fail.  Material things fail.  God never fails.  He is totally in charge.  He can make it happen.  He has the resources.  It’s not hard for him to do it.  The struggle is within us.  Shame on us.  God is God.  We should have no trouble trusting him.  His counsel is immutable. Abraham patiently endured and obtained the promise.  We are more than conquerors.  The only thing that inhibits things is if we do not trust God.

In God—trust.

In God—go forward.

In God—have peace.

In God—magnify the Lord.

It is good to trust in the Lord.  If it is on our currency, surely it should be engraved upon our hearts.
