Desires of the Heart

The message was brought by Mark Osborne.

Luke 24: 24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

Jesus died and was buried.  He arose.  The women talked to Jesus and told the others he was alive.  Verse 11 says their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.  These people had been told by Jesus that he would rise again in three days, but when the news came they didn’t believe it.  If Jesus walked through the doors tonight what would we do?  Why didn’t the disciples believe it?  Sometimes we just don’t see him.  There is a story of a man who was told the Lord would visit him.  Through the course of the story an old man, a cripple man and a child visited him.  He was upset because the Lord didn’t come.  When he asked the Lord why, he was told the Lord did come in the form of the three visitors.  The man didn’t recognize him.

Those who work in the school system see kids all the time who need us.  Somebody just needs to give them a chance.  Are we giving the lost that come to our churches a chance?  Do we receive them as we should?  Jesus is all around us.  There should be love for one another.  We should be searching for lost souls.  What are we doing?  Waiting for someone else to do it?

After the scripture opened the hearts of the men, they wanted to get the word out that Jesus was alive.  How often does the Word of God get opened at your house?  I know how it is.  You work.  When you get home you have chores to do and supper to eat.  The next thing you know the Bible has not been opened.  It’s important to read the Word and get excited about it.  Do we have that?  When we talk about the Lord we get a renewed energy.

Jesus said they were slow of heart.  The Bible is the instruction we need to uplift and help each other.  We are to train the weaker and not be afraid of losing our spot if they grow.  The men asked Jesus to eat with them.  He blessed the food.  It’s important for others to see us do something as simple as pray over our food.  Jesus is coming back.  People have heard it all their lives and many don’t really believe it anymore.  Are we trying our best to get people to the Lord?

Psalms 39:1-3 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me. I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.  My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue.

David was trying to hold back what the Lord had done.  He had been forgiven.  He tried to keep silent but found he couldn’t.  Some Christians have become ashamed of the Lord.  Whenever you get scared, wait for the peace to come.  God will be with you as you stand for the Lord.  David didn’t want to sin with his tongue.  Our tongues are dangerous.  We have it to praise God, but many times it is used wrongly.

If our desire is for God, we will do the right thing.  Look into your heart.  Do the right thing and follow the Lord.  It can be a hard thing to do but the end is heaven.  If we’d worship now like we’ll worship in heaven our churches and our country would turn around.  If we get excited, people will wonder why.  The Lord will bless our desire.  If we come to church desiring to be in his presence he will work.  If we’ve lost the desire we need to get it back.  That’s the way to see a change in our churches and our families.

Every Christian has a ministry to uphold and souls to seek.  It’s time to start doing our jobs.  Care about others.  Talk to them.  Be a friend.  Do your best to uplift the Lord.  Get in the Word and get a deeper desire for the things of God.  We need one more soul.  If we all reach one more, look at how many that would be.  I can’t reach your person and you can’t reach mine.  We each have a job to do.  Let’s get the desire for one more soul.
