Yet He Hath Made Me a Covenant

II Samuel 23:5 Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.

The devil is in the path of every believer and will be until we leave this world.  At times he may cause us to question if we made the right decision to trust the Lord and if we continue to do the right thing by following him.  Serving the Lord can be a challenge.  In America we have it easier than other countries.  Many suffer persecution for their belief in God; it is coming here.  The devil works on us.  He worked on Jesus from the very beginning of his ministry.  He challenged Jesus with his “if you will do this, I’ll do this” statements.  He showed Jesus what he had to offer if he would bow down and worship him. Regardless of how the world, life, and the devil treat us, it will always be the right choice to serve the Lord and say no to Satan.  Stick to the covenant you made with God.

It seemed a lifetime ago to David that God called him from the shepherd field to be King of Israel.  No matter how improbable it seems, we can accomplish God’s will in our lives.  David confessed life had not been what it should on his part.  He made mistakes.  He did wrong and messed up.  There were some things that he had no control over.  Life was life.  Things happen sometimes.  The advertisements of this world are for the purpose of making us think we’re getting the short end of the stick, the bad end of the deal when it comes to God.  The devil has many covenants.  He’ll offer anything you’d like as long as it’s not the right way.  His ways are disguised to appear different each time, but they are all the broad way that leads to death.

It may seem like you’re getting nowhere.  Even if things aren’t going so well, don’t believe the devil regardless of what he offers.  The only covenant we can trust is God’s.  Only his promises are true.  We have a real anchor in Jesus Christ.  The devil’s covenants are false and full of lies.  Many realize too late that they have made a mistake in not following and living for God.  In the current moment it may seem a little off in your world, but be assured that your current circumstances won’t keep God from keeping the covenant he has made with you.  Confused?  Trust God anyway.

Verse 4 says he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.  This is drawing a picture of how it will be for those who keep their covenant with God.  Don’t be concerned about God keeping his part.  Hasn’t he been faithful and true?  Jesus said the way is narrow.  It is a way of self-denial and hard-life choices.  If the devil makes you feel you’ve made the wrong decision, think about your life before Jesus.  Sanity came in my life after I found the Lord.  Order came to my life.  Yes.  We can have order in a chaotic world.  It is safe to believe that we can count on God.

The devil’s covenant is temporary.  God’s is forever.  It will outlast any problem you are having today.  It will get you home to heaven.  This is our choice.  God made his.  He’ll keep his end of the covenant.  How about your end?  Think about your life and the covenant you have with God.  Do you need to make a renewal on your part?
