Ecclesiastes 11: 3 If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.
This is good advice for all of us especially for any not ready to meet the Lord. If your life ended right now, which way would your tree fall?
When we moved to Abingdon, there were three trees in the yard. They always seem to lean in the direction you don’t want them to. We took down an apple tree; it went down perfectly. A few years ago an ice storm took another tree down. It fell in the right place. I still have a cherry tree and it is leaning in the wrong direction. As we live our lives, we live toward a goal, a direction. The scripture says that if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be. We can know where we’re headed. How we fall will be determined by the direction we have borne our fruit.
We live one day at a time. The Bible teaches us to make days count. Every day we live for the Lord takes us in the right direction. If we live for the Lord our tree will fall in the right direction. Right now, while we have control, we need to do what we need to do. Make decisions that God wants. We have one life to live, and if we don’t want it to be a waste, do what the Lord wants. Obey him. Being a Christian is not a waste of time. Laying up nothing in heaven for eternity is a waste.
Verses 1 and 2 state cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth. In life we need to be a giver not a holder. If we please ourselves first, it won’t be a happy life. To assure a life of happiness, be a giver. You’ll find self-confidence and success come to an end. You’ll be incapable of doing enough in your own power. A person may be able to buy anything he wants, but he may go home to an empty house. He may take great vacations but go to a home without happiness. His tree is growing in the wrong direction. In order to have eternal life, we must prepare now. We have peace because we have given our heart to the Lord. Invest ourselves in Jesus. If I turn my back on my life and invest my life in Jesus, I am not wasting my life. The devil would have us think so, but it’s not true. When you cast your soul on the water, you find life. When you live in a giving mode, you do well. Sin and the little bit of pleasure it brings is not worth eternity in hell.
We don’t know how our lives will be tomorrow. Everything is uncertain. We could be in the funeral home tomorrow night. If our tree is headed in the wrong direction, today is the day to change directions; that’s the only way for it to fall right when it falls. God can take our lives and we can leave this world right. Live it right to leave it right!
Verse 4 says he that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. If we continually worry, we won’t serve the Lord. If we wait for the winds in our life to die down, we won’t do it. There will never be a better time than now to live for the Lord. If God says do it, trust him over your excuses. The devil will always cause a stir and give an excuse to keep you from the Lord. Then he’ll laugh at you when you end up in hell. If you look at the clouds and wind in your life, you’ll never turn around. God can cease the winds and move the clouds.
The advice in verse 9 is for all, youngest to oldest. If I live to be 120, what is that compared to eternity? We’re still young enough to turn ourselves toward God. I’m 58 and thankful to have lived it. I’ve already preached the funerals of many of my classmates. Our living now gives us a chance to decide for the Lord. The verse says rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Here’s the way it is. God has given us life. We’re free to live our days how we want. Know this. God will call us into judgment for how we live. Whatever choices we have, stop. Consider them. We will have to answer for them. No matter how messed up we are before now, Jesus is the great eraser. He gave his life to straighten up ours. He’s the one who can forgive and fix our lives. He’s the only one. If we don’t settle our account with him, we will give account of it one day.
Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity. If we throw away our lives on ourselves, the sin will cause us to fall in the wrong direction. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Which direction are you headed? Is it time to turn? Give your heart and soul to the Lord.
