To Us There Is But One

To us there is but one.  This should be the creed of our life. People should see God first when they look at us.  There has been idolatry down through the ages and as much now as ever, if not more.  People will sell their soul for a dollar bill just to get ahead in life.  The need is for us to be a child of God who honestly says there is but one God.

I Corinthians 8: 4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. 5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) 6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. 7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge.

In the days of ancient Corinth, idolatry was real.  Religions were made around a rock, a piece of wood.  Regardless of the composition, it was a god only in the imagination.  In our day, people worship just about everything.  Many brag of their independence and who and what they are and possess. You have to think a certain way.  You have to be a certain way.  You have to do certain things.  All of it is just to fit in with the crowd.  People before us had a problem with conformity just as people do today.

Moses went to the top of Mount Sinai and left Aaron in charge.  The mountain was dark and quaking with the presence of God.  When we take a look at God, we see his hand in our lives a great deal more than we see other things verifying that our statement of life should be there is but one God.  Moses was on the mountain a long time.  The people of Israel should have been okay.  When we’re on our own through the week, God should still be our only God.  Resist the temptation to put other things before him.  People can call us what they want, but what God says is the only thing that matters.  Stick with him and be a non-conformist.  Look to Romans 12:2 and be a transformer not a conformer.  Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Corinth had the same problem the children of Israel had in their day.  While the cat’s away, the mouse will play.  Israel gave their gold jewelry to Aaron who tried to tell Moses that he just melted it, put it in the oven and a calf came out. That’s crazy.  It didn’t have the power to shape itself.  It was carved into the likeness of a calf.  You can be known far and wide on Facebook, Twitter, and known on the street and still die and go to hell.  People’s opinions won’t save us.  The merriment of worshipping the calf was loud.  People gave lip service to God and when Moses was gone they turned.  Many do that in church and then during the week lay the Bible down so they can get along with the crowd.  Christianity is 24 hours a day.  Our inward and outward statement should be “to me there is only one God.”  There is only one Savior, one Lord.  He made us.  We exist in him. We are alive because God allows it.

An idol is nothing.  People who have money just want more.  The Bible says riches are deceitful and beauty is vain.  A person who esteems the Lord is honored.  That’s what makes us rich.  Our bottom line financially may not be much, but we have so much more in God.  He takes care of us in a million different ways.  We should be willing to turn around and say “to me there in only one God.”

People act so in control, so together and all the while the devil pulls the strings as if they are puppets.  It’s a shame to be a slave to your job or your bank account, or how you look physically.  That’s a wasted life.

Paul told the people of Corinth that meat offered to idols was nothing was a waste of good meat.  It’s a waste of a good life to esteem anything higher than God.  Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.  Jesus told the church at Ephesus that I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love.  Ephesus went through the motions.  God will not be one of the gods in your life.  He will be the only God.  It’s all right to have things.  It’s all right to have interests.  They cannot come before God.  No matter how much we esteem them as gods, there is but one God.  Use some sense.  Treat God as the only God.  No others exist.

There is but one God, the God of the Bible.  Because of him we are here.  He’s responsible for the gift of life we enjoy.  We owe our existence to him, not a pill or a doctor, not good genes.  In him we live and move and have our being.  Subtract God out of life, and we’d fall over.  If we put God first, we’ll have a better life.  We have a roof over our heads.  We have food to eat and a car to drive.  We don’t know what is on the tomorrow, but if we are faithful unto death, we will receive a crown of life.

Jesus will see us through.  Looking to Jesus, acknowledging him as Lord is the key.  It’s by him.  We’re still here.  The church is still here.  The gospel is still here.  The Bible is still here.  We have not been let down, so let it be our motto.  Renew dedication.  To us, let there be but one God—we in him and by him.
