The law that sets you free. Wait. According to the scripture, the law can’t set you free. It depends on which law you’re talking about.
Romans 8: 1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. The book of Romans can be a challenge to understand. Our spiritual state, how salvation works, and the laws of God are laid out here. Take time to study and figure it out. The devil doesn’t want it to add up. He wants you in the dark. God provided a Savior, a miracle of re-birth. He doesn’t require us to understand everything about him in order to receive what he has for us. What we have to do is trust him and let him work in us. If we get to heaven, it will be done by our trust in the Lord.
No one can free you from the law of sin and death, no one but Jesus. Paul talks of the law a lot. The law is simply a set of rules that govern. We’d be completely uncivilized without them. Traffic signs are there to let us know that laws are in place to govern how we drive. Our bodies obey the laws of nature. I don’t look like I did when I was 15 now that I’m in my 50’s. The law is at work. The laws of biology and our genes are laws we can do very little about.
The same is true in the spiritual world. We have laws that govern our spiritual level. Regardless of how we feel about God or ourselves, these laws govern our soul. We’re blessed to have them. The law of truth of God’s Word is there to help us safely navigate life; it defines God and shows us right and wrong. It is just and holy. Without the truth of God, we wouldn’t know how God sees things. The world doesn’t want God’s standard. Many want to make their own laws, and we have chaos because of it.
It shows us that we can’t be perfect. We are not gods. Our ancestors in the Garden of Eden had a choice, and they made the wrong one. They broke God’s law and the law of sin was made. God didn’t make us sinners. At the point of our knowing right from wrong and then choosing sin, that law took over to condemn us. Chapter 7 says for sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. The chapter also says for I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. We may get nine of the commandments right, and fail in one. We’ve sinned. We all sin and come short of what God expects. This is not to be taken lightly. Sin controls all aspects of our lives. It’s alive and working in us. The law of sin commands obedience and as it governs, it presses us into sin. The Bible tells us the wages of sin is death. It demands hell, the just retribution for our sin.
Where the law couldn’t save us, another law came—the law of Christ. It’s not about us getting it right but our trusting the one who got it right for us. The scripture says here that for what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. God knew the law of sin ruled and would destroy us. Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. We couldn’t save ourselves. We needed help. The law of sin was crushing us. If you’re unsaved, you’re on a dead-end road. If you look for help in any other place for your sin problem, you’ll not find it. Jesus is the only answer to sin. He did it right. Where we stumble, Jesus walked straight. He fulfilled the law. He took the sins of the world and became sin for us. His suffering created the law of Christ which gives us redemption and salvation in his name. Sin can be defeated. When Jesus said it is finished it was like signing an important document. Only this one was signed in his blood making the new law effective. Whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. When we hear the good news of Calvary, we can call on the name of Jesus Christ, believe in what he did for us and be saved. Romans 10:9 says that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
No matter how bound by sin you are, the law of Christ can set you free. It made salvation possible for anyone and everyone. The moment you call on the name of Jesus and believe in your heart the death, burial, and resurrection, you are born again. You’re washed in the blood he shed on Calvary. Through the spirit of regeneration, you are quickened—made alive from the state of being dead in your sins. You are set free! We cannot do a thing about the power of sin over us, but Jesus can. The law of the spirit of life overrides the law of sin and death. When you believe, you will be set free.
The Bible says and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Which law do you want to govern you? I’m not talking about religion or belonging to a church. I’m talking about Jesus and the laws of God. Believe the truth; it will set you free.
