Luke 8: 22Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. 23But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. 24And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
Where is your faith? That’s the question from heaven today? It doesn’t ask if you have faith. Too often people use excuses. “I can’t believe” or “my faith isn’t strong enough.” Somehow people think this is true, but the Bible says God has given every person the measure of faith. We’re not given a measure of faith but the measure of it. An equal measure was given to all, more than enough to save the soul. God has made it possible for us all to believe.
We exercise faith to live in this world. We walk in it every day. The question is where are we putting it? We are constantly told how to act, what styles to wear, and how to fashion our lives in general by society and the devil. We’re under constant pressure to do this or that. We can give in. We can believe those are our only options and put our faith in them. Many put faith in things, in money. Many put faith in themselves. Doing so is being careless with life. The truth is that the one who lets you down the most is yourself. You can’t trust your feelings. You can’t trust what you think you see or think you hear. You can be deceived. You can believe what you want. You can say you’re all right spiritually, but if what you believe doesn’t go along with the Bible then you are mistaken.
Jesus was in the boat with the disciples. He had calmed storms before. Still they chose to believe the power of the storm over the power of God. Make no mistake. You cannot weather the storms of life without the Master being in your boat. If there has ever been a good prayer for us to pray it is Master, we perish.
Faith is simple trust and believing in something to the point of conforming to it. After the disciples woke Jesus, he commanded it to be calm. We’re living in anything but calm today. We’ll never find calmness in life outside of Jesus Christ. He knows where to send your storm, so where is your faith?
I stand before you today and say that I still mess up, but I’m doing my best to trust the Lord. I turned my heart over to the Lord 39 ½ years ago. I realized I couldn’t do it by myself. I saw I was in danger of hell. The Lord showed me I could trust him. I didn’t put my faith in the preacher that night or the church I was in. I said “Lord, save me.” He took me in his arms and saved me. It’s still a mystery how he saves. I simply put my faith in him.
Do you want to accept Jesus? Do you need to rededicate your life to him? Do you trust in everything but the Lord? Just where is your faith today?
