We’re familiar with the term guardian angels. We each have one or more. What role do they play? Many times we take them for granted. We have our being in the dimension of time and space, but alongside that is the unseen world. We can’t visualize the spirit world, but it is there. For every demon around us, an angel is near.
Psalm 91: 10There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
In the secular world there is a lot of tradition about the spirit world. Much of it is myth. The truth about it is in the Word of God. There is an evil presence in the world. Darkness does exist. At the same time there is the host of God. The Bible calls him the Lord of Hosts which means he is Lord of a heavenly army. There is more to God’s kingdom than the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and the saved. There is a host. The book of Revelation says 10,000 times 10,000, an innumerable multitude. God can do all that needs to be done right from his throne, but he created angelic beings for a purpose.
We draw our images of them from the renaissance paintings which may or may not be right. It’s hard for us to grasp because we understand through the natural mind. Every angelic being is beautiful beyond our comprehension. I’m not concerned so much with what they look like as I am with what they do. Each of us has a guardian angel, an unseen presence, with us at all times. Although charged to be with us, they do it because they want to. Angels have great respect for the believers of God. They also have great empathy for us. They see what we can’t. Every time the devil goes to work against us, angels can see it.
Even the Son of God had an angel. Angels comforted Jesus. At his word angels would have come to his defense during his ordeal at Calvary. We have God as Father, Jesus as the faithful Savior, and the Holy Spirit within us to go with us. We also have a companion angel, another friend—a fellow servant of God. His eyes happen to be able to see God. He works with us; he takes care of us. Verse 11 says the angels have charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They have been charged by God with our care. When we have no Christian friends around, we still have a friend there. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us and angels stand with us. They protect us.
Verse 12 says they shall bear thee up in their hands. Angels see the enemy after us when we’re unaware. His feet stand for us when we can’t stand. Jude tells us that the devil tried to steal the body of Moses, but the angel Michael stopped him. Angels escorted Lazarus to the bosom of Abraham. They help us in ways we can’t help ourselves. Never take credit for yourself when something works out. Credit is due to God and those he has charged with our care.
I don’t know how many angels we have, but verse 12 is plural. They shall bear thee up in their hands. However many angels we need in any situation, we have. In all our ways they are there for us. We are never without at least one angel who is ready to lift us up. We don’t have to trip and fall against a stone. It pays to be obedient to the Lord. We should respect them and let them guide us. When the devil throws that stone in our way, we can be lifted up over it and not fall. We can’t let the devil have his way. When we do, we tie the hands of those who watch over us. When we stick with the Lord and follow him, we are assured of safety.
How challenged are you to live pleasing to God so that nothing comes between you and the hand of your angel? Our angels have taken such good care of us; the least we can do is listen to them. With God’s direction, our angels will get us to heaven. Be as committed to your angel’s companionship as he is to yours. You are in angel hands.
