You may wonder where the way is. Most assuredly it exists and can be found if you look in the right direction.
Jeremiah 6:16-17 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, we will not walk therein. Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, we will not hearken.
This is instruction for right now. Where is the good way? Is there still a good choice? A good life? Absolutely there is! It’s hard to see in this time of discouragement and despondence. In our own resources we fail. Society is failing us. Institutions of education and government are failing us. There is a global failure mode in progress. Can it ever be good?
When good is seen, some are afraid to trust it because it might be false or an illusion. God said creation was good. Sin made the mess. It brought a curse on the human race, and it’s building to an ending point. We’ve talked for years about the end of the world. It’s as if we stand at the shore at high tide. We first feel the water at the feet, then the ankles, then the shins. If we don’t move back, we’ll get swept away. There are all sorts of deceptions, confusions, and proliferation of beliefs. “Here’s the way. No. This is the way.” We can see by behaviors that those ways are not working. Many wonder if there can be peace with God in these times. Can we really be assured of the future? Yes, and we can be assured of today. If we’ll stand in the way and not jump to conclusions or turn to other directions offered by the world and the devil, we’ll be all right.
That means there is a right road. It’s not new; it has not been modified to adapt to our century. It’s the old way that our ancestors chose to walk. There will be many ways to choose, many standards to go by. There is only one good way. There will always be only one way. It’s the old way. The blessings, benefits, powers, and victories of the old way still work. They are still the same. God doesn’t change because times do. The scripture says to stand in the good way and not ask for changes to suit us. We may face things we’ve never faced, but nothing catches God off guard. There will never be a situation that the Lord doesn’t know how to handle. There is a way. God made it. Stop the deliberations and stand in it. It’s still the path of power, happiness, cleansing and solution for life. It still makes all things possible. It still feels good. It still tastes good. It still works and makes things fit together. Just because it is old doesn’t mean it is outdated. God has no expiration date. He’s still the same God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. It’s the same blood, same cross, and same victory of an empty tomb. It’s time we claimed the promises. God made promises about the future, but he made many more for us to claim today. He’s giving us plenty for the here and now. Take a look around and see where the good way is. You don’t have to wait for tomorrow. If we know the Lord and trust him in this old path, we will find the good way.
This world is worse and getting more so. There is still good. It’s a wonderful day with Jesus Christ. Regardless of what you have or don’t have, the goodness of life doesn’t depend on that. It depends on the path you’re on. The age-old path of the gospel, of trusting Jesus and his word, the path of walking by faith not by sight still works. The scripture says right here that we shall find rest for our soul. The first consciousness man had of God is still the same God today. James said there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning with God. The first book of the Bible says “in the beginning God.” Before creation, there was God. The last book ends with “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.” When it comes to an end, God will still be the same. Amen means it is settled. We don’t need a new path; we don’t need an alternate path. We don’t need a “rider.” The old path still works as it is.
So you say “It’s not working for me? It let me down.” Rest assured it is not because God doesn’t work anymore. The problem lies in us. We must walk in the old path. Look at verse 16 again, and you’ll find the problem. The people said “we will not walk therein.” If we fail, we cannot blame God, the Bible, or the path. Fault will rest completely with us. The scripture said in verse 17 “I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, we will not hearken.” It’s our call as individuals. It’s our choice. When we stop asking, seeking, trusting, and leaning on the Lord and begin to trust in anything or anyone else, we will fail. God doesn’t need a thing to be added to his plan. It will work if we hearken to it.
The old rugged cross still sets people free from sin. The old path is the only path that shows us the good way.
