Our Mother’s Mistake; His Mother’s Correcting

Romans 5: 12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.  16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.  17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.”

We all make mistakes.  Some are little and have very little consequence on us.  We make a left turn when it should have been a right one is a small mistake.  However, some mistakes are fatal.  Our mother’s mistake was fatal.  Genesis 3:11-19 gives us the story of Eve, the mother of us all.  Her mistake cost each of us a lot.  We all suffer from it.  If you ever look at yourself and wonder why you can’t get a handle on yourself, it’s because even though you may be saved you still have your old human nature.  We’re constantly reminded how much we need Jesus.  Our first mother’s mistake brought effects to the most horrible end that could be.

Eve’s mistake was that she sinned.  It originated by one deed.   Both she and Adam had a clearly stated truth before them.  Genesis 2 says “and the LORD God took the man, and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” There was one forbidden thing.  They knew it and couldn’t say otherwise.  When tempted, Eve had a total disregard for the instruction God had given.  She ignored the warning. Had she not eaten the fruit, she would have never died.  The devil tempted Eve to eat the fruit.  Our present condition is the result of her doing it.  We can’t blame her for our sin though.  She tempted Adam after she was tempted.  Both ate what they shouldn’t have. Both blamed someone else, but both were accountable for their own actions just like we’re accountable for ours.  Our mother Eve had the same freedom of choice we have.  The devil can only tempt us; he can’t make us sin.  When Eve sinned, she brought the result of disobedience to us all.

The loss of innocence came immediately, and spiritual death became the real problem.  Adam and Eve’s children were given physical traits of their parents, but sin fell upon the entire human race because of Eve’s mistake.  The Bible says “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” She made fig leaves to cover herself. She made excuses.  The Bible says when we seek to cover our sin we won’t prosper.  Eve set the pattern, but our mistakes belong to us.  We can’t correct them because the human race could not correct itself.

By one man sin came.  By one man it was corrected.  God sent his Son incarnated into the womb of a human being.  His mother said behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” She couldn’t correct the mistake of her mother Eve, but she allowed herself to be the vessel so it could be.  Someone not part of the human race had to become part of it to lift the curse.  This man had the nature of God his father and the human nature of our original mother.  Being a perfect man he bore our sins on Calvary and corrected the mistake of Eve.  Once and for all he took care of it.

Our only hope in getting out from under the curse of our original mother is through Jesus Christ.  We can make it to heaven because we have a Savior.
