This is a simple reminder. Consider “I AM THE GOD.”
Exodus 3:6 “Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.”
There is a voice speaking from a bush that’s burning. Don’t get too close. Take off your shoes. The words of caution were for a reason. Moses was close to the realm of God where the created met the Creator and where holy and human met. Get too close and death would follow. Moses realized where he was. When he took off his shoes the voice identified himself. “I am the God.” Not just God but THE God.
Moses knew God through different means; at this time he heard the audible voice of God. In the midst of our serving the Lord many things happen. Stop. Listen to his voice. It underscores the truth. “I am THE God.” This makes all the difference in the world. We’re saved because Jesus is THE son of THE God. It’s good for us to be reminded of just who we serve.
Moses was afraid and hid his face. This was THE God his mother taught him about. Jethro, the priest and his father-in-law, taught him about THE God. He was telling Moses “I am THE God” your mom told you about. I’m thankful God is this real. He’s THE God of the Bible, THE God of Christianity. He is this because he’s real. This changed Moses’ world. Before this, he knew about God. He became real. All other gods were figments of one’s imagination. Our faith is not in vain. The father of Jesus is THE God. He’s our God. Others are counterfeits. There is only one deity. It is undeniably proven so.
Moses didn’t see him in an image like we are. God’s like image was in his son Jesus Christ. Through this manifestation of God we know him; he doesn’t have to materialize. We feel and see him everywhere. We see all the “livingness” of God around us and in us.
Moses was 40 years old at this time. In his first 40 years he knew God in a providential way. In his birth the providence of God put him in the bulrushes. The hand of God brought him out, and Pharaoh’s daughter took him as her son. Providence caused his own mother to be his nurse. He received the highest learning and had the best resources he would need. God knew what would be beneficial. In the midst of all the teaching he received from the Egyptians his mother taught him about THE God. Look who ended up writing the first five books of the Bible. What he learned in Egypt helped Moses to do this. God was Moses’ God before he even realized it. He had gained knowledge of God but had never met him.
He fled Egypt for his life after killing an Egyptian. God guided him to Midian to a priest who continued to teach him about THE God. He married the priest’s daughter. Not until this moment at the burning bush did he actually meet God in a deeply personal way. “I am THE God” who allowed your mother to take care of you. “I am THE God” who guided you to Jethro and his daughter. God was their God. In effect he told Moses—I’m your God too. I’m thankful God reveals himself to us, and we can have a personal relationship with him. He was the God of Moses’ ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The God who spoke to Moses is the God of our ancestors, the God of those who occupied this church long before we did. He’s our God.
People are so confused about God. We should never say, “God, if you’re there” or “God, will you come?” Maybe I need to be there or go to him. GOD IS THERE. He’s THE God. No matter how the world treats him he’s still THE God of all; he reigns and rules. He was THE God in the good old days and is the same God now. The God we trust is the only true and living God. As far back as you can go, “I am THE God.”
After God told Moses what he wanted him to do, he was afraid to go back to Egypt. The Hebrews were slaves, discouraged, and beaten down. What was he to tell the people? They would want to know why he was there and who sent him. God said tell them the “I AM THAT I AM” sent him to help them. Regardless of what or who man thinks God is, He remains who He is. Nothing ever changes that.
Wherever life may take us, God will always be THE God for us. How can we fail if we trust this God? He is to us as he was to Moses—THE God.
