Your Finest Outfit

The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles:4 Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.  5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.”  Deuteronomy 29:3-5

Let me ask you something.  Are you wearing your finest outfit from the closet? If you’ve not worn it in a while, are you saving it for something? Sometimes I wonder if the Lord gets amused at what extent we go concerning our outfits—and we do. Some countries don’t have the option of different outfits or the means to own them. I wonder how the Lord sees it when we place more emphasis on the outside than the inside. We know he’s displeased.

The children of Israel were at the end of their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. Moses had them stop to consider to what extent God had provided for them. God preserved their outfits. They wore the same one they left Egypt in 40 years earlier. At the Passover they were to kill the lamb and eat it and put the blood on the doorposts.  They were to have their staff in hand and their clothes on and ready to go. Little did they know those same clothes would still be worn 40 years later.

I’m sure they didn’t consider this miracle often. Wearing the same outfit and shoes for 40 years is certainly one. Could you still wear an outfit from the 70’s? Some we wouldn’t dare wear; others wouldn’t fit! They certainly would not have held up this long.

And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land; The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles.” (Verses 2-3)

Let’s consider the miracle. It is the same God. The proof is in the same clothes, the same shoes. They were made to last and were as good as new. “Your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.” They had miles on those shoes, but they were like new.  The children of Israel just went on without a thought about it. It was taken for granted. Some of the greatest miracles are the everyday things.

The garment of salvation is complete head to toe.  God takes care of us. We have outfits for this and that, but the garment we wear inside is more important. This garment was bought at Calvary and handed to us when we received Jesus as Savior.  Times come and go; they may be better or worse. It is still the garment of salvation that sustains us.

Get tired of the same old Christian look and way? We’re offered more modern looks or a new version of Christianity. Don’t be fooled.  There is one way to heaven and one life. It’s all in Christ Jesus.  He needs no improvement. His garment always fits and looks good. Take care of it. Repent if the garment needs washing. Trust in the Lord and the same shoes we got with salvation will get us home. The children of Israel didn’t need new clothes. We don’t need a new look, a new way.  We got the best the first time around.

The Sunday papers have more sales papers in them than news. It’s full of advertisements made to get you to run to the store and buy it. That outfit sure looks good on the model, but when you get it home and compare it there is a sizable difference. Salvation garments look good on us all. We’re a new people, from bad looking to good in eternity’s point of view.

We no more than have worn clothes until more sales come out telling us we need something else. Seasons change—need new clothes.  You age—need new clothes.  We end up putting the old stuff in a yard sale.  Clothing here wears out. They have a time limit. The time comes when we just have to park that old car.  The things of the world pass away, but things of the Lord last forever.

The outfit just fit the children of Israel.  Ours fits. Don’t get bored or ashamed of the garment of salvation. Don’t get ashamed of the Bible or your testimony. Christians are being painted in a bad light these days, but don’t give up. Don’t let the fashion of the world rule. Be more concerned with the salvation garment.  Stay satisfied. Advertise Jesus in your life. That’s when people get saved.  Wear the garment in gladness. It will get us all the way home.

I’m glad God outfitted me. No one was better than mommy to get us dressed for school. The clothes fit and they worked. I want the heavenly Father to outfit me each and every day.  What about you?
