A Nation’s God

The presence of the Lord in the sanctuary this morning and at the flag ceremony was great. July 4th is special when it falls on Sunday. It’s a double blessing. We celebrate the day our Lord arose. It means mankind has a Savior. Whichever way people live or die, they do so with a Savior having died for them. It is utter foolishness to enter into eternity having willfully refused Him.

Every nation has a God. In David’s time people of other nations had their own set of gods carved from the  earthly elements.  The people believed they lived, but we know they didn’t. It was a waste of time. David reminded Israel they had an invisible God who didn’t have to be transmuted, and he was not only Israel’s God, but the God of the entire heaven and earth.

Psalm 33:11 “The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Everyone looks to some god, even in this day and time.  Some have turned from any god whatsoever. Religious systems of David’s day included those who worshipped Jupiter and Saturn, Baal and Ashtaroth, and so many more. Today it’s Communism, philosophy, new-age, materialism, or even the god seen when they look in the mirror. Yes, some teach we are our own God.

The nation that survives is the one whose God is the Lord Jehovah. He exists without our belief in him. He is I AM WHO I AM. He needs no one to believe in him to be God. He was God before anything. He’s never wavered.

He is the same God now as 200 years ago when this nation was formed.

He is the same God now as when David was on his throne.

He is the same God now as when Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt.

He is the same God now as when God looked to the earth and found a man named Noah.

He is the same God now as when he stepped down into a garden in the cool of the day to visit our original father and mother Adam and Eve.

Because of sin we were separated from God, but he had a plan to send his only begotten son to us for our salvation.  By belief in him, our fellowship with God is restored. As a brotherhood of believers, we can be a nation whose God is the Lord.  The nation of those who don’t believe are still as much Americans as we are yet they are lost. God help those who choose to believe in any other god.

It was my choice to be saved, but I didn’t choose God like picking one head of cabbage among others in the grocery store. There is only one God, and we cannot ask for a better God, Savior, or best friend.   “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Our nation is hurting and in darkness. Just like every firework that goes off, there is a bright spot where those who believe in the Lord are.  We must trust in the God of Hosts and pray for our fellow Americans to find him.

We cannot legislate Christianity nor should we.  We can force no one to be saved.  We can only invite them to be. The best way to serve our country is more than taking up a gun and going across the water. While answering this call is good, calling upon the Lord so that our nation will be one whose God is the Lord serves a greater part. We could truly then have one nation under God.  A nation whose God is the Lord will make it.

If God could start our nation by acts of the Continental Congress, he can keep our nation. I’ve quoted it several times, and it’s completely true “blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.
