Here is a meaningful scripture that helps us understand how God deals with man and the rest of his creation. It’s a simple illustration that takes a fact of life that coexists with us to teach us an important lesson.
Sometimes we think there are so many people and so many prayers for God to take care of that maybe it’s too much for him. Maybe he’s not able. Do you ever think that sometimes he doesn’t hear you? Have you ever tried to do something to help him with his caretaking? It is so hard for us to grasp the enormity of God even in what he already does.
Matthew 10:29 “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.”
See how meticulous God is of all his creation. Sometimes we build a wall around us and think no one cares. We feel alone. The Lord comes to us, but we are disappointed because we thought things should have been done a certain way and they were not. Have you asked why isn’t he coming through when he said he would?
Sometimes we feel swallowed up. Have you ever been on the seashore and watched the waves come in? They bring in bits and pieces of things from who knows how far away and how long they’ve been in the ocean. They wash ashore with the waves right at your feet. Have you felt like a piece of debris that God sees in the sea but doesn’t take real notice of? Listen. God cares for the whole world, but he cares for each of us as if we were the world.
Jesus talks about two sparrows in the market place. They’ll sell for ½ a penny. There are so many sparrows that they are not worth much. They’re cheap to come by. Even today it’s the same. Sparrows are everywhere. On the other hand, a bald eagle is worth much more. Jesus said not one, though there be a billion, will fall to the ground without him seeing it… “without Him.” He knows every sparrow individually. When one falls, is hurt, or needs food he sees it and takes care of it. Jesus is not ashamed to be the Lord of every sparrow.
Why should this help us out? Verse 31 says “fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” Whether we fly or fall or whether we feel caged up and ready to be given away, God knows and cares. The Lord loves the sparrows, and we are much more valuable to him. We value each other; we definitely value ourselves. God values us much more. When I don’t think of you, God does. He takes care of us. He’s always there. Jesus said he’d never leave or forsake us.
If he is God of every sparrow, then you mean everything to him. In return he should mean everything to you. Consider how you can do it. The best thing any of us can do is surrender ourselves to him and let him be our Lord. Let him be the Lord of your nest. If you stumble and fall, call on him. If you are caged somehow, he will set you free, and be with you until you are. If he wants to be the God of the sparrow, how much more does he want to be your God?
Let him be the God of your life. Each of us is in the position to come to him. There is no better time to say “Lord, will you show me how to let you take care of me?”
