Psalm 45:1 “…my heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. 11 So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.”
This is one of the prophetic psalms pointing to the Messiah. Several meanings are in David’s mind. He is speaking of the sacredness of marriage and also to us. The king’s son is getting married. The bride is coming from the people. She will become the daughter of the king. The prophecy is how the Lord feels about his children and the church in relation to us and His Son, Jesus Christ. This psalm has been used for centuries in Jewish weddings as a chant. It is as familiar to Israel as “Here Comes the Bride” is to us. It is sang as a wedding takes place and looks toward the Messiah at his coming.
Verse 1 gives relief to David; there was something good to write about. God took his hand as he wrote. David was king and writing this for his son Solomon as he was about to be married. The Lord is committed to us in the same way; he allows us to be the bride of Jesus. We have a relationship with God Almighty through Jesus the King. He was born King of the Jews; although rejected, He is real King to all who believe his name. As king, David could choose any girl he wanted for his son’s bride. He settled on, gave grace to, one. Out of God’s grace and mercy he chose us. Before the creation and the fall of man in the garden God had plans for us. His son would choose a bride-those who believe on him. Let’s not waiver in our belief in God and keep him in our heart. Believing is the prerequisite to having Jesus, the King of Glory as our groom. Many religions take Jesus so far and leave him. To them he is a teacher, a prophet or even “a” son of God. They will not accept his as “the” Son of God. The world may try to change it, may try to change us, but only God can change the heart.
Verses 3 and 4 recognize the Lord as “O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty.” Verse 5 speaks of his arrows as “sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies.” By having Jesus Christ we have a King, our groom, who will defend us all the way. David said “the people fall under thee.” Just like the shade from a big tree, the King stretches his arms in our trouble and we fall into them for safety. Much of civilization is anti-God, anti-Jesus yet Jesus will take care of his bride.
Verse 6 assures us that the throne of God “is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.” It is established, eternal, sure; it is right. Backed by Satan, some have tried to claim it, but it is the Lord’s. We are part of the royal household of God. It is a “right scepter.” When God rules, everything is all right.
Verse 2 reminds us that “grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.” We don’t deserve it, yet we have been chosen. Trust him and you’ll be safe in his palace. When we took Jesus by the hand, he claimed us with an everlasting love; he brought us out from among the people to his side. With his grace on our lips God accepts us; by it we are attractive to him and should always keep our attraction for him.
What a picture we see in verse 8. The girl can’t believe she’s been chosen. She realized her unworthiness. Think about where we were before we came to know Jesus as Savior. He has brought us a long way. The verse says “all thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.” Wrapped and clothed in the Lord it may not be long until those final touches come. We’ll go to the royal palace of God. The doors will open for us.
“So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.” It is our duty to honor the Lord for the privilege to be part of the bride of Christ. Rightly so, for he is our Lord. We’re in a state of preparing. It’s getting close to the marriage. He is molding our life into his life. “I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.” Are you ready?
