Do You Have Any Idea Where You’re Going?

Pastor Bob brought the message.

Hebrews 11:8-10 “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:  For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

We take a map when we go on a trip, yet we still get lost sometimes. The kids or the wife or husband may look at you and say “do you have any idea where you’re going?” When we think of this in a spiritual sense, it’s not as important to know but to trust the One who does know.

Abraham’s faith sparked him to move. He trusted and followed God. There was to be a great nation through which the redeemer of all mankind would come.  Abraham told his family God told him to leave Ur for a place he’d never been. There were no maps, no GPS, only Abraham and the voice of God. Abraham’s wife Sarai would have said “do you have any idea where you’re going?” Abraham would have to say “no, but we are going somewhere.”

We have fears today with the economy, our health, our money. We don’t know what it will be like by the end of the year. We’re concerned but then not so much. We’re not going hungry. We still have a few dollars. We have our jobs. We have our families and our friends. We have a house.  Our little world is comfortable. We know our way around our little place. We feel like we don’t need to trust God that much. It’s easy to look at the problems of others and be OK ourselves. From our point of view it’s all right. The time may come, and sooner than we think, that our little world will change. There could be a death in the family; we could be robbed. It’s easy now to trust God in all our prosperity. It’s another thing when we don’t have a job and are losing bits of our world. That’s when we really need to trust God.

God spoke to Abraham; he told him to leave the world he was comfortable with. He said to leave the familiarity of his life. He was to trade his house for a tent. He would no longer be a man of position in Ur. He did it. That’s why Abraham is called the father of faith. Regardless of how Abraham pictured it, he had no real idea of what it all meant. Armed only with a promise he believed God and that faith was counted for righteousness.

We must quit trusting God from our armchair. We have faith in our money, our health, our insurance. These are good to have but sometimes produce little faith in God and more on something else. If life took a bad turn would you still trust God? God may take us out of our comfort zone. We may not know where he will lead us. We have to trust the Lord.

We will never lose our ability to believe and trust God. Abraham had heard about God, but now he heard him. He believed and obeyed his voice. If God said there was a land, then there was a land. If God said his family would be as the sands of the sea, then it would be. Abraham got more that he ever asked for. We must quit acting like we know more about things than God does. Let’s confess we don’t know. God knew Abraham didn’t need to know. We don’t need to know. We need to trust God. God trusted Abraham enough to send him on this journey. If God puts that much confidence in us, then we should put our confidence in him.

God knows all about it. We need to trust him.  Do you have any idea where you’re going? No?  Good. That means you’ll trust the Lord.
