Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is
excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart
to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the
Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The children of Israel sang after crossing the Red Sea.
King David sang. Jesus and his disciples sang a song in the upper room.
Revelation shows us there is music in heaven.

What kind of songs are we to sing?

Verse 19 says psalms, hymns, and
spiritual songs. Psalms are for praise. Hymns are of commitment and invitation.
Music has to be used in the right way; it is life changing. Songs of the
spirit touch the heart. We make melody in our heart and soul. It’s giving
praise to God.

Our goal should be to honor the Lord. Lifting up our voice gives
us strength. We cultivate thanksgiving. We complain less and thank more.
Spiritual songs will flow right into Christian love and unity. This will demand
submission to the Holy Spirit. This is what verse 18 says. The key to singing
is being filled with the Spirit. Don’t quench the Spirit.

Sing and please the
Lord.
