Matthew 7:28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these
sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 For he taught
them as one having authority, and not as the scribes

The crowds in Jesus’ day were used to hearing theories.
Jesus laid out the facts, like they needed to be. He spoke with authority not
like the scribes. So why could He speak with this authority? It was about whom
He was and what He was doing—and what He was going to do. He was going to be
beaten and die.

Who is Jesus? He is the second person of the Trinity.
Matthew 26 speaks of being baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the
Holy Ghost.  Baptizing in not for
salvation but for following the example set by Jesus. We are saved and become
part of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. He takes care of us in everything we
do.  We are not and do not have to beg
like television preachers do for the support of this church and its work. God
supplies the need. This gives Him authority.

John says in Him there was life through the redemption of
His blood. We need someone to take us into battle. We need someone to hold our
hand. We are sinning Christians. We know things are wrong but many times we act
on the premise that it’s easier to get forgiveness that permission. God gets
tired of this kind of behavior. He should be the first thing we think of every
morning and the last we think of every night. He should be our daily purpose
for He is the beginning and the end. This gives Him authority.

There is a new aspect now that we don’t have to go to
church, but something is wrong when we don’t, so we need to pray. The day after
911 more praying was done than ever before. But soon it ceased. The Lord brought
us through. People forgot. We are to remember that Jesus is the only begotten
of the Father; He’s the only way to heaven. Jesus said He is the way, the truth
and the life. God set it up this way.  He
gave His Son. His Son died on the cross. This gives Him authority.

Jesus is the greatest teacher the world has ever known. We
are to walk in His foot prints. Sheep follow the shepherd—stubborn sheep have
to be led and pushed sometimes. Jesus is not just a religious teacher. He is
the gospel.  He was not just a popular
figure. He is the Lamb of God. John said behold the Lamb of God which taketh away
the sins of the world. Often we are too lazy to give our best to Him. He expects
our best. He revealed an eternal truth and wants us to do the same. This gives
Him authority.

Jesus had power over sickness. The Bible tells of many
miracles, and we see many today. He takes us through valleys; they make us
stronger, better people. He had power over nature. He calmed the seas. He told
the man sick of palsy to be of good cheer for his sins were forgiven. Our faith
gets weak. It’s not where it should be. The devil messes with us; he walks to
and fro seeking whom he may devour. He has power over the devil. This gives Him
authority.
