17 For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:
We see descriptions of God time and time again, and one resurfaces time and time again. "Mighty God" is used a lot in the Bible. An example of it is how nonchalantly Jesus walked on the water. He did not pay attention to the storm. He doesn't pay attention to things that bother us; HE JUST PAYS ATTENTION TO US!
The way Moses describes God to the children of Israel at this time is what they needed to hear. It said a lot about God's relationship with them. God had done what needed to be done for them when it needed to be done. God not only told them, he showed them. Israel never asked for it, but God does good for us even when we don't ask–it's not our request first. God already knows.
There was still much out there for the children of Israel to do. The possession was still to come. There was still a Jordan to cross. They needed to be reminded that God had kept them for 40 years in the wilderness; he reminded them that God had taken them out of Pharaoh's hands. This was not of their own might. IT WAS GOD'S MIGHT.
Verse 17 says "For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible…" HE is God of gods. He is truly supreme. He is over it all. Regardless of how I feel about him, HE IS GOD. We need to let him be OUR God. He says we can call him "our God." We can through Jesus Christ call him our God. He is LORD of lords. A lord is a governor. God is our LORD. We have a governor; we have one to rule and guide us. He is in charge and he takes care of us.
Verses 14-15 say "Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD'S thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.
Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day." Behold—everything we see above and below is God's and is under his leadership. There is no place in the universe that He is not God. He remains forever the Mighty God. There is no weakness in him. His heart never fails; it's never skipped a beat. He always has been and always will be the MIGHTY GOD.
Paul says to be strong in the Lord and the power of his MIGHT. David says to remember all his MIGHTY works. He is MIGHTY in strength. He is MIGHTY in his ruling. He is MIGHTY in his courage. Where can we go in our fear? He is a fearless God. We need to get behind his shadow.
Such a God has chosen us. We should be more than flattered; we should fall on our face. He chooses to be MY God, YOUR God. He sent his Son to be our Savior. The prophet calls him "Wonderful, Counselor, Prince of Peace, THE MIGHTY GOD." Jesus brought a mighty salvation. He has laid out the red carpet of his blood to give it to us.This carpet runs straight through this world to the Gates of Glory. It still works today.
Verse 18 tells us He is mighty in his care. Whatever we need God has and he'll give it to us. We may look around and say "I don't need this or that" and why don't we—-God has already supplied it. We won't go without. He'll come through tomorrow just like he always has. He is omnipotent– he is the ALMIGHTY. Let's praise him for it. With Jesus all things are possible. WE HAVE A MIGHTY GOD.
He reigns from heaven above with wisdom power and love.
Our God is an awesome God.
