His First Message

We know Jesus is soon to come; we don't know when the last message of
the gospel will be proclaimed. However Jesus' first message is relevant
today. It needed to be heard then and it needs to be heard now.

Mark 1: 14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came
into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom

of God, 15 And saying, The time
is fulfilled, and the kingdom
of God is at hand: repent
ye, and believe the gospel.

For thirty years Jesus had been on earth. From Egypt he came to Nazareth and grew up there. The land of Israel was divided into three parts–Judea to the south, Samaria in the middle, and Galilee to the north. Nazareth is in Galilee. Therefore Jesus was known as a Nazarene and a Galilean. He still is. Everyone in the region was very familiar with him and he with them. Joseph was well known for his work as a carpenter. In his growing up years Jesus never tried to promote himself. He was just another Nazarene or Galilean. He came to us to dwell among us so we could be comfortable with him and know him from a human standpoint.

His time was near, so he went to where John was preaching. Jesus and John were cousins. Each knew each other. Their families knew each other. They knew who Jesus was, but they could only comprehend a little of who he really was. John leaped in his mother's womb when he heard Mary tell his mother the news of the baby she had conceived. John knew enough that when he saw Jesus approaching the river that he said "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world." Still Jesus was much more than John could comprehend.

Jesus is more than we can comprehend. We have more of a friend in him than we realize. We have his guidance and protection even when we're not thinking of him. Jesus should be all the world to us for we are all the world to him. He came to his own to save his own. We, like those back then, take him for granted and think of him as just another Galilean.

After the baptism by John, Jesus went into the wilderness and was tempted by the devil in every conceivable way, yet he never gave in; he did so because of all his people–for you and me. We can't handle the devil. Jesus handled him for us. We're here today because Jesus faced the devil and won. We have never really faced the devil head on because Jesus is there for us; we simply cannot do it on our own. Jesus was there the moment we were born. He is the one we are most used to when we're all by ourself. He is there with us. He's a Savior in every area of our life. Jesus began his ministry in his home place, in Galilee. He did it alone. We need help that only he can give us: for us and us alone. Jesus is not silent. The devil tries everything to get our attention, but the voice of Jesus is familiar to us. We should heed it. Jesus' first message was to his people. The familiar voice would speak, and they were to listen. He still speaks today. He has the message for us, and we have the ability to listen and take heed. The message spoken then is the same today: the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. He went unto the fishermen with the message; they followed him. God help us not to take his voice for granted.

The time is fulfilled. We don't have to wait. Even the heavens know it and tell us. We have about run out of time. Jesus, the one most familiar to us, is saying the kingdom of God is at hand. The kingdom of the devil has about run its course. Its not because we think the time is at hand, it's because Jesus says it is. He said it "is at hand" because he was there, an arms length away. He was as close as his outstretched hands, those which would be nail scarred. The kingdom is so close that if we reach out we can almost touch it. We can almost feel it. If we open our ears we can almost hear it. Jesus said to repent because the time is short. He said it to the whole crowd that day, not just a few. The Pharisees heard it as well as those who claimed to be nothing. He said he, the kingdom of God, was at hand. Repent. Believe the gospel. We need to get our hearts ready. We not only need to repent; we'd better repent.

Jesus' first message caused those fishermen to follow him. What will we do with it? It's the very same message letting us know that things are almost ready. It's that close. Is Jesus telling you come back and give him your heart? He who knows us so well is saying what we need most– REPENT.
