My Son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Prov. 23:26
Prov. 23:26
"Hmm…. what to get Dad.." This day is much like Christmas or his birthday. Generally, when we think of those hard to buy for, it's our wives or moms. But surprisingly, turns our that Dad is. He isn't hard to please at all, yet still it's just so hard to decide, isn't it? We know he always says," Anything is fine.." But we want to make him feel the special person that he is. Here is Solomon, King of Israel, who had everything anyone would want. But he is also a dad. His books, Ecclesiastes and Proverbs, are written to his son, for his son. These books are priceless sources of truth, wisdom, and perception that can safely guide anyone through life. He gave his son everything, and asked nothing in return, except this. Isn't this like a dad? Our Heavenly Father is feels the same.
What is wished for most seems to be asking too much, the cost was too high, and besides, it hinted of an invasion of privacy. But it was something that, when given, would prove to be a gift that would benefit more the child, and would be for his own good, prosperity, and happiness.
HE ASKS FOR HIS HEART. Not to own, dominate, nor rule it, but to have its trust, confidence, agreement, and respect. The King knew from experience that the heart was the seat of who a person is and how that person would be and live. He also knew that the heart was the target of Satan, and how easily he could deceive it, and in turn bring about the eternal ruin of a soul. This dad was Israel's best and wisest king, yet he had grown weak and complacent, beginning in his heart. What followed had been disastrous, almost to his losing of everything. He did not want his son to suffer the same. Perhaps our most foolish mistakes made when we are young is to ignore our parent's wisdom and advice. We feel that they, being of the older generation, cannot understand us; since we are better educated and aware than they are, we can best advise ourselves. Sometimes we get to the point of feeling that we can better advise them! In truth, though they grew up in a different era, under different circumstances; the facts of life and the principles that govern its direction and outcome are the same. Because of this, and their experience through it, we can safely trust their wisdom, knowledge, and judgments.
The same Is true for our Heavenly Father. He knows all things about us and our world we have to exist in. His Son came to experience everything anyone has to encounter in life–the bad as well as the good. He took the very heart of our difficulty upon Himself and bore it unto His death on the Cross of Calvary. In doing this, He has achieved a Wisdom and a Way for us all. By turning to Him, listening to Him, deferring to Him, and trusting Him with all our hearts, everyone of us can find and have the very best of this life and the life to come. He has not asked for the impossible. He does not want to deny you your individuality, privacy, nor your freedom. He only wants you to entrust all that to Him, and to His Truth and Guidance. And everyone who does finds happiness, purpose, peace, fulfillment and eternal safety that are not possible any other way.
What is your reply? It's Father's Day and His Day as well. Will you face Him on His Day empty-handed? Come now. You have just the right gift. Give it in happy trust and full assurance. You will not lose a thing, and will be oh, so glad that you did.
After all, it's only your HEART.
