This was needed advice to some people in a dilemma and there was no solution. Everything was fixed–this could not wait. There was nothing around to fix it with. This wedding couple wanted everything to be perfect. Details may not seem important to us, but to this couple they were.
The public ministry of Jesus had started. He was still in Nazareth. In this scripture we see Jesus attending, of all things, a wedding. It was probably some friends of the family. Everyone was there right down to the Rabbi and the governor of the feast, the who coordinated the event. As a family, Mary and Jesus along with the first group of his disciples chose to attend the celebration. Jesus was on the move; his ministry was beginning; the first disciples had already been called. We too are moving about our days with the Savior just as they did back then.
Jesus took the time to go see this couple get their marriage off on the right foot. What a normal thing to do. Jesus was and is a normal, everyday person. He knows my everyday life, and its ups and downs. He knows my world. He came as a normal person to save normal people just like us. He has power to raise the dead, yet he takes care of our little things as well.
Everything in the ceremony went great until the reception. Something was very wrong. Everything was there and ready except the wine. Some people were talking about it; they must have confided in Mary. She too saw there was no wine. So what…that's a minor thing. Don't bother Jesus with that. We need to remember that minor things in our lives are of interest to Jesus. Most of our bigger problems start out minor. It let them go, they mushroom to major things. We would be a lot better off if we'd let Jesus take care of it first. The devil uses such little things and makes mountains out of those molehills. We should never put off till tomorrow what can be done today when it comes to fixing things. We don't need Jesus next week or next year–WE NEED HIM NOW! We need Jesus now more than ever because we're going through stormy weather. Yesterday is taken care of; we need Jesus today.
The wedding was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. To have something go wrong at an event such as this was a major disaster. No one knew what to do. Mary gave them the best advice she could. Pointing to Jesus she said whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. The first miracle of Jesus was for a small need. He doesn't deal in the big things and leave us alone to deal with the rest. What seemed an impossible thing to the servants was no more impossible than raising the dead.
Jesus said three things. Get the water pots and fill them with water. Get a dipper and draw out the water. Take it to the coordinator for approval. As the water broke the surface, it became new wine. In effect the wine would be like punch in a current day wedding. It was new wine–fresh grape juice. If it had been intoxicating it would contradict his own teachings about being sober and avoiding strong drink. The governor of the feast was amazed and called it good wine. At the end of a celebration it was normal to bring out the watered down wine. Remember whatever our situation, whatever our need–small or big–Jesus can deal with it.
Jesus had already been baptized by John. On the mount of transfiguration and then on the cross, God would say this is my beloved Son; hear him. What better thing could Mary have said than whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
What is your need? Can you trust him? Sure you can. Is his word truth? Can he help us? We KNOW he can. Is he telling you what you ought to do? Do it. It must be done now; don't wait. What is Jesus asking you to do?
