What Is Your Sign?

Jeremiah 31:21: Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps: set thine heart toward the highway, even the way which thou wentest: turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.

A nation is held together and made civilized by a simple thing. As complex as America is now, imagine doing without road signs. We pay attention to them. Try getting to CA from here without one single road sign. Getting from Point A to Point B without a sign would be pretty hard. Signs keep us connected. They let us know where we are right now, how to get where we're going, and how much further we have to go. Some signs signal danger ahead. If we don't heed them, the best case scenario is we get lost; the worst case is we get killed. Signs are for our safety.

In our day-to-day life we are on a journey, a highway. Without Jesus we would hopelessly be on the broad road to destruction. But we're on the King's Highway. The verse above says to set our heart toward the highway. The devil puts many exit signs to get us off the highway. We have to pay attention to the signs. Jesus gives us plenty of room to stay within the lines. The road may be straight and narrow, but we can make it if we set our heart to it.

Signs get us to where we're going even if we've never been there before. We feel assured with signs on the road. The devil will try to alter the signs, but God has set up waymarks. A waymark is simply a sign and signifies the signs along the highways in Bible times. So what about those signs.

Have you come to a stop sign? We talked about Peter this morning. His stop sign was the first crow of the rooster. He never saw it; he was in a twilight zone. He was way down the road and didn't even know it. There are some signs that tell us to stop and look at what the devil is doing. If there is a stop sign–STOP!

A yield sign is a fork in the road; a change is coming. The sign is for our good. If someone else comes along who has the right of way, we may find ourselves in trouble. Today we listen to way too many who want their way or no way. They will not yield to anyone. Failure to do so could be serious. God wants us to yield to him and trust him. Humble yourself before the Lord and he will lift you up. At a yield sign?….YIELD!

Road number signs let us know where we are and what we're doing. If we don't watch them, we'll get on the wrong road. Doing so will make the journey longer. Spiritually taking a wrong road may put us out of God's will. There are no shortcuts on God's highway. God has the best route. We will be in a mess if we take another. The Bible is our road map. Pay attention to the ROAD NUMBER SIGNS.

Mile markers show us at frequent intervals where we are. When I visited Key West a few years ago, I followed Highway 1 that comes from Maine all the way down. I got to mile marker zero. There was nowhere else to go. There was only a little bit of sand and then the water. Are you paying close attention to your mile marker? You may be closer to mile marker zero that you think. Key West is a pretty town, but the place we'll be at mile marker zero is our spiritual life won't compare to any place we've ever been. A mile marker speaks clearly. The journey is closer to its ending that we realize. The destination is near. Where is your MILE MARKER?

As in getting to the end of any trip, we check ourselves out–we look in the mirror. Are you ready for your journey to end? How will it end? Take a good look at the window of your soul. Virginia has mile markers every tenth of a mile. God is that precise. Where are you? Are you reading the signs? What is your sign? Are you heeding the signs before you? How are you doing on your journey?
