(21) Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right
seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange
vine unto me?
(22) For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap,
yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.(23) How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalam? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways; (20) For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy
bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high
hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.
Verses 21-23 show the need. Verse 20 shows the breaker. The most dominating problem we have is sin. It's easy to blame on something or someone else, even the devil, but we must face up to it. Everyday we sin and come short of the glory of God. If we have a specific problem we'll pray to God in detail; however when it comes to sin we generalize everything. The sins I commit are my problem, my responsibility. I can't blame anything else. We cannot blame Satan, our flesh, or just our old human nature. God made us a new creation when he saved us–AND GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN ME THAN HE THAT IS IN THE WORLD.
Tomorrow we'll face it again. Right off the bat Jesus gives us the solution. He is the Breaker. It is not sin until we commit it, but it does become a reality when we do it. We can't handle it; we can't just sweep it under the rug–it will still be there. Only God can then break it.There is no other power to deal with it. Because he broke it 2,000 years ago He can break it now! He is our advocate from old time and has broken the yoke (verse 20).
Verse 23 states "how canst thou say, I am not polluted." How can I say I have not sinned in this body? Is it possible to never fail? I have never been able to go through even a day without failing the Lord, whether it has been through thought or deed. Our greater sin then comes when we won't confess it to God. How can we say we are not polluted? All we have to do is turn on the television–we see pollution and take it in. We get a phone call that makes us mad–we are polluted. The sin is there, some of it the sin of denial. In denying it we say we don't need God. Can I say I do fail but don't sin? I've not done what I should but…….. Come on now! WE SIN! We know it the moment we do it. We feel God's touch. How can we deny that? Take a look. When we don't confess it just goes faster and faster and faster just as verse 23 says like a fast dromedary. Verse 20 shows us that sin is like a permanent marker that leaves its stain. We get so used to the mark we don't see it, BUT GOD DOES. Our sins separate us from God. No wonder we can't pray. Verse 22 tells us there is a barrier between us and God when we sin. Everyone else may give their approval, but God doesn't.
Everything that used to be sin is still sin because the same God is still God. He is the faithful Savior and we need him today due to our propensity to sin. We don't know how God does it. We can try all we know and deny all we want, but the mark is still there. We must put this old heart under the crimson flow of Calvary—the mark will go away.
I know it is stupid to sin but I do it. Before I sinned the first time God had broken the bands–God had broken my yoke. It is not "if" I sin it is "when" I sin. He will forgive. The devil cannot take away my privilege to ask forgiveness. God doesn't have to put up with our intentions or our words, but he shows us grace because the defeated the devil and finished it at Calvary.
Acknowledge the sin. Come. The Lord provided the way to break the yoke. As David said, let God restore the joy of your salvation.
