John 5:46-47 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
Trust: a firm belief or confidence in the honesty, integrity, and reliability of another.
Entrust: to put confidence in another's care. To allow someone to do or have something of yours without fear or hesitation of outcome.
You would think that trusting and believing would be easy, but that is where the most trouble comes in a Christian's life. We cannot seem to confidently trust in him without hesitancy of the outcome. Letting go and trusting the Lord are not isolated things. It is hard to trust with a plus/minus nothing attitude. All he wants is for us to trust him to save us and keep us as we continue in his salvation and care.
It makes us or breaks us. It saves us or keeps us lost. It maintains us in God's will or keeps us from it. It's a trusting with all your soul. It takes faith and confidence to entrust something dear to us. Yet we climb on airplanes everyday unconscious of the trust we place on the nuts and bolts to stay together and work right and keep us in the air. We don't know the pilot from Adam but we trust him to fly the plane. One could get edgy thinking about the mechanics of it or wondering if the pilot does know how. We drive and trust our vehicles everyday. We don't think about wrecking and getting killed or people staying on their side of the road. We trust and trust and trust. But when it comes to trusting God, of whom we have every reason to trust, we don't.
The people who got near enough to Jesus knew they could tell the presence of God. Despite what he did or said, some had trouble trusting Jesus. The disciples, even John the Baptist, had their doubts. Why is it hard to trust in the Lord? Why is it so hard to believe? The only one who can make it easier is you.
The devil fights us to keep us from trusting and seeing the Lord for who he is–someone to trust and believe. Jesus remains who he is; it doesn't matter what others say. Jesus always was somebody and always will be. In John 10:36 Jesus said I am the Son of God. It just is; but why don't we know it? It should be easy to trust the only Son of God. There is no reason we can't trust him with our all.
It's me. I try to do right but get it wrong. I've been disappointed in myself but not God. He does all things well. He never claims to be anything. He just is the Son of God, the good shepherd, the living bread. He gives us eternal life. He said I and my Father are one.
The people wanted to stone Jesus for those words. They just didn't get it; they couldn't trust him. History records the birth by a virgin, his life in Nazareth, being killed at Calvary and his death and resurrection. IT IS NOT JUST HISTORY! IT IS THE GLORIOUS TRUTH! He releases burdens; we don't have to fight on our own. When I trust him I'm free. There is joy.
Why then is it hard? The devil makes it hard, but he knows and believes it more than we do. When he tempted Jesus in the wilderness he said "IF" thou be the Son of God. Later he reversed it when the demons said "we know who you are–the Son of God." That very devil that flicks something at us and we say "now, Lord, I don't know if I can trust you." Why do we do this?
It's so easy to trust other things; why can't we trust the Lord? We should have no trouble. Look at his record. He told them to believe his works. Could they not see the works that he did? My record sure wouldn't hold up, but his record does. He has always kept his promises, always done everything right. I have NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER been disappointed in him. I've never looked for him and could not find him but there have been times when I wasn't there for him. He is committed to us. We see the Son and can trust God. We know more about Jesus than we let on for he's revealed himself to us.
Come with all. Trust him with all. See him and believe him; it will be all right. He has given us everlasting life and will raise us up. How will you believe if you don't believe his works? In other words, he is saying quit fooling around. He is as good as his word. His word is his bond. His word is my assurance, my confidence. Nothing further. Just do and let it go. Keep doing it; quit doubting. That's all he asks. If we achieve the challenge of trust, we won't worry about the mountains we have to climb; they will be climbed. Trust and get safely to your destination. Only trust him. Only trust him. Only trust him now!
