A Very Present Help

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

God IS refuge. God IS strength. God IS help. David, well-loved king of Israel, had everything one could want; by some definitions he had it all. However, we see in this verse his expression of his own need. If God means anything at all to us, we see his desire to be our helper. As faltering as we are, He wants to help US. The world that enslaves us can be altered by these words–help– a present help, our refuge. God can meet our need.

Now the question. It's not do you believe there is a God. It does not matter what we feel one way or another about the answer to that question. The fact does not change. GOD IS. Ask yourself this question. Am I in need? The answer is obvious. Yes! No matter what we have or how much we have, we still need. The need is not something; it is a need that cannot be supplied any other way. The need is Someone.

Your soul? We all come short; we need forgiveness. Why do we think we can handle everything? Do you think you are doing pretty good? That's not good enough. It's foolish to think we can handle everything on our own. The first step to help is to realize the need of help. I cannot provide my own solutions. I can't save myself. I'm not a good enough refuge for myself. I know I am in need. I need a Helper. GOD IS HELP. He sits on the throne in heaven with Jesus at his right hand making intercession for us. Jesus suffered in every way we will ever suffer. Any need we will ever have, he has experienced. When he arose from the dead it was to meet our need. He speaks on our behalf to the Father.

Acknowledge your need of help. God waits to bring us unto himself and hug it away. He gives us actual help–help now. We do not have to wait for our request to be processed. It is a present help. We can feel his presence. The devil has to flee at the presence of God. David says God is a very present help. God comes to us like a tidal wave. You can feel the breeze of his presence. He's all around us, strong and real, and very present. We do not have to imagine him; he is evident just like the air that comes through the vents.

Run to him. There's no need to explain it all to him. He knows already. In the past 30 minutes he's already given us his help. Hebrews 4:16 states let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in the time of need.

When you find God's Son, you find Help. Come. Bring your need to him.
